Big Fire Near Trinity Forest Continues To Burn

On Wednesday, a large fire consumed a good portion of the land near Big Spring, not far from where the new horse park and golf course will be built near the Trinity Forest. According to the Save Pemberton’s Big Spring Facebook page, nine fire trucks were called to the scene — and the fire has sparked up again today. Speculation is that it was arson. You’ll find some pictures of the damage on that page, too.

  1. I just toured the Pemberton farm a month ago. It is a stunning swatch of prairie land steeped in memories that come from generations of raising kids there. I heard a story about how one of the generations’ dads dammed up a spring-fed creek on the property to make a swimming hole for the kids/grandkids. Bad luck and ill karma to whoever ruined that gem.

  2. Big thanks to Dallas Fire Rescue Station 34 and their firefighters who were able to get the flare-ups from the wildfire that happened 48 hours previous. Kudos also to Sarah Standifer of Trinity Watershed Management and her staff for getting the firefighters to the scene and bringing in thousands of gallons of water to dump on the area. Billy Ray Pemberton used his own pickup to drive the firefighters down into the woods. TPWD Biologist Brett Johnson ferreted out the still burning trees/hot spots. Recent DISD TAG grad Alexander Neal humped-in and filled the water buckets.

Today there were federal, state and local government there at Big Spring including Corps of Engineers and TPWD. So when the new smoke and flames were noticed, a number of people were on hand to get it knocked down. Trinity River Watershed Management was able to put additional water on the burned area with a water truck.

I think it was about a 15 acre fire.
