Making Dallas Even Better

LBJ Is Almost Fully Operational

The first phase of the LBJ Express Project opened over the weekend, which reminded me of this TxDOT animation that Zac and I doctored with our own voiceover and Star Wars effects. Just in case you missed it. If you don’t get some of our references, here’s a key.

    This is scary, yet awesome.

In all seriousness, one of the most amazing things about this project is how not a SINGLE elected official or City staffer ever thought to bring up the fact that stringing miles of elevated road on both sides of I-35 E from Hwy 183 to I-635 might not have been the greatest idea, as it will permanently blight that entire section of the city….

This has to be one of the only major cities in the U.S. in which such an ugly project, generating huge permanent negative externalities on surrounding land (the section between LBJ and NW Highway, in particular), could be constructed with absolutely no negative criticism/discussion. The only other places were I still see similar approaches to highway development are in certain developing nations.

I look forward to taking the new Valey View Exit on LBJ. Why did they have to change the spelling?
