Closing the Book on Borders at Preston Royal

The Morning News is reporting that three area Borders will close due to the company’s bankruptcy. In addition to stores in Lewisville and Plano, the Preston Royal location will be shuttered.

Dang, it feels like losing a member of the family.

UPDATE: It appears that the Morning News must have been checking with David’s comment. They’ve updated their list and so shall we. Regretfully, the West Village location is biting the dust jacket (sorry, couldn’t resist), as well as stores in Burleson, Colleyville and Mesquite.

  2. This is really sad news.

Is this the one that is near George W. Bush?

  3. Maybe they can put in a Blockbuster

  4. Considering their prices were well above other retailers, such as Barnes and Noble, it comes as no surprise to me that they aren’t doing well financially.

I’ve found their prices in some cases to be as much as 3 times what Amazon/B&N charged for the same products (and without there being a sale). When I called them on it, they didn’t care nor show any urge to match or otherwise reduce their price.

    Good riddance.

  5. Yeah, where in Hell is George W. Bush supposed to get Schopenhauer’s The World as Will and Representation, or Joyce’s immortal Finnegans Wake*? I mean, I guess there’s Amazon, but it’s sometimes hard to tell if it’s the illustrated version or not.

  7. Dang, are there any left? I’ve always found the Preston @ Royal store worth going to. Even after Barnes & Noble opened catty-corner I still went to Borders. It’s too bad.

  8. This is a big loss for the neighborhood. I’ll never forget a Saturday afternoon visit there soon after I moved to the area. Browsing for a book, I looked up to see Lauren Bacall holding a little dog and talking about her book. Since then I’ve encountered everyone from Chelsea Handler (had to ask who she was) to Newt Gingrich to Ian Rankin. I’m sure this was a pretty pricey piece of real estate, and the publishing world has been upended by Amazon and ebooks.

  9. I knew the chain was in trouble when the stores I went into during the Christmas shopping season had NO decorations….

  11. There are a total of 7 stores closing in the DFW area. I wonder what list the DMN was looking at?

  12. @Long: Story on dallasnews.com said the stores at McKinney and Lemmon and Lovers and Greenville would stay open. For now.

  13. I am cautiously optimistic about what retailer we might see fill the void. Once B&N opened in the NW corner of Preston Royal Village, I never again darkened the doorway at Borders.

  14. I just left the Borders at Preston and Royal in Dallas after receiving and email from Mike Edwards, CEO of Borders, regarding the closing of several Borders. I am sick and heavy hearted about this decision as I’m sure are many other Dallas residents. This is hands-down the BEST book store in Dallas with excellent management, an absolutely winning, knowledgeable staff, including those who have served in the military to protect our country (including the books we choose to read) and who are proud to be employees of the store. I have spent hours and hours there, it’s a warm and comforting environment and I have the most pleasant experience EVERY time I’m there. Not to mention the EXCELLENT signings by wonderful, talented, respected and revered authors.

A bookstore such as this Borders is a gift to be treasured – we must protect it – this institution is more important than profit and it’s my understanding that the Preston/Royal location is one of the most profitable stores! If this store closes it will have a terrible ripple effect on the other tenants in the shopping center.

What can be done to save this location?

  15. I agree that this Borders has excellent service and great staff. I’m sad that my neighborhood bookstore is closing.

  16. I am so sad about the Preston Royal closing. My family loves to spend hours in that store. It is agreeably a neighborhood treasure. Can we save it??
