I live in a glass house, but here’s what the new redesign looks like.

Sounds exacly like their paper delivery to me.

12:13 pm lead story: “Video Games Can Be A Teacher’s Assistant”
@ 12:14 pm on January 18, 2011
And they want how much a year to subscribe?
@ 12:17 pm on January 18, 2011
it’s faster if you pay for it…
@ 12:17 pm on January 18, 2011
…and that makes me sad.
@ 12:19 pm on January 18, 2011
Also: I see how you have the Yelp listing for In-N-Out Burger open in a tab.
Reminiscing about the D Magazine server crash of 2010?
@ 12:23 pm on January 18, 2011
That’s something of a cheap shot, @TimmyTyper.
The site has had some performance troubles today to be sure, but your snarky post is unwarranted. There’s never been any problem with the FrontBurner blog. Oh wait, yes there has.
Better to point out the new DMN’s design flaws and missed opportunities, but no, you’d rather go for the easy joke.
Typical.
@ 12:44 pm on January 18, 2011
Does that make you sad, Jim?
@ 12:59 pm on January 18, 2011
Bethany adds so much to this blog. What a stellar addition.
@ 1:05 pm on January 18, 2011
Jim Marco takes it personally. Ouch.
Wonder how long the DMN tested their beta before launch.
@ 1:11 pm on January 18, 2011
@Jim Marco: Did you miss the part where I acknowledged that I live in a glass house? Please google that phrase if you’re familiar with it.
I’ve asked our online creative director for his thoughts on the redesign. He’s a thoughtful fellow, and his opinion on a matter like this carries more weight than mine. I hope to be able to share his thoughts tomorrow.
My quick take, though: it’s cleaner, but I still don’t like it. The entire page now looks like one enormous blue hyperlink.
@ 1:12 pm on January 18, 2011
Oh, and Tim—this kinda goes without saying, but you know you can never say anything bad about The News or WFAA without it seeming like sour grapes.
Fascinating little dynamic there… Wonder if it works the other way around?
@ 1:15 pm on January 18, 2011
@Tim:
(1) Why would he Google a phrase if he’s already familiar with it?
(2) When is D planning to roll out some of this online creative director’s online creativity?
@ 1:17 pm on January 18, 2011
It’s basically the NYT site, but a lot bluer and clunkier with ads.
Thank you for linking the NY Times site for us. So often people reference these obscure Web sites without including the corresponding URL.
@ 2:19 pm on January 18, 2011
The refresh button does work, but after doing it four times, I gave up.
@ 2:26 pm on January 18, 2011
If it were anything like the NYT site, I’d rejoice, but the categories are jumbled, new stories are even more hidden from plain site than before, and the entire design looks scattershot instead of logic-driven.
@ 2:30 pm on January 18, 2011
@ Hein re: @ TexasRanger
..especially when broaching controversial subjects like Dallas Barbecue.
Tim, I suggest a “snark/sarcasm translator” button for those that have difficulty with the web to brain connection.
Has anybody else noticed the redesign broke their iPhone app? I checked for updates but there is none.
@ 2:55 pm on January 18, 2011
@Droopydave – you have to buy the new app – the old one no worky now.
@ 3:15 pm on January 18, 2011
@Tom The new app is free. And from what I can tell, much improved.
@ 3:22 pm on January 18, 2011
Thanks Tom. I thought they would issue an update on the old one. Instead, there are 2 DallasNews apps in the store; one that works, one that doesn’t. Brilliant!
@ 4:11 pm on January 18, 2011
Well, it seems they did remove the old DallasNews App from the App store. Surprised they didn’t alert users of the old app you needed to get the new one.
So far, the new app only gives yesterdays news. And the video doesn’t work. *sigh*
@ 6:21 pm on January 18, 2011
Do I need a CueCat to look at the site????
Heh-heh.
@ 8:44 pm on January 18, 2011
Well considering that the new “D” site is horribly slow to load, and I am getting a server error from the blog page link, I now understand what glass house Timmy is referring to.
@ 9:01 pm on January 18, 2011
i have no idea why this is, but i have ALWAYS had massive problems loading dallasnews.com (the main reason i never look at it) but checked the new site today and it loaded quickly on four separate occasions. this might actually make me read the site (although never re-subscribe).
@ 9:39 pm on January 18, 2011
This eRag has certainly gone down the snark hill and that makes me sad.
@ 9:57 pm on January 18, 2011
ICK. And I don’t care for the DMag website redesign either. But, the difference is I will keep reading DMag even though the new structure is painful to view.
No problems with slow loading, etc. Just ICK. No pay no way.
@ 7:57 am on January 19, 2011
I found it interesting and annoying that on the eatsblog they removed the jump link to SideDish (as well as all other foodie blogs in Dallas). I used to use that link to get to D Magazine, and others, now I have to type it in myself. Oh well. Gives me one less reason to go to the dallas news site.
@ 7:57 am on January 19, 2011
That’s crazy to expect users to download a new app vs updating the existing one. Readers are supposed to know this how?

FrontBurner® launched in March 2003, the first blog in Dallas run by a media organization. This is where the editors of D Magazine come to waste a tremendous amount of time.

I wonder how newspapers like the Dallas Morning News react to this new Apple demand; will Apple do this in the US too (or do they already..is that why subscription prices are through the roof for the DMN?).. http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=CNG.9d98f5078c22208156a5fddb2195a4d0.2e1&show_article=1
