How To Have a Legal Same Sex Marriage in Dallas (The One In Texas)

From San Antonio’s Belo-owned KENS-5 station, word has it that a couple – Mark Reed and Dante Walkup - got somewhat legally married last month at the W. In Dallas, which is in Texas, which has a big fat ban on gay marriage.

So how? By Skyping in an officiant in Washington D.C. The marriage will be recognized in our nation’s capital and a handful of states, but in Texas, they’re still just two guys who love each other but aren’t allowed to get married.

  1. As far as I can tell, this story was first reported by the blog Joe.My.God. on Nov. 11, not KENS 5.

Anyway, a very clever way to stick it to the religious fanatics/bigots/oppressors who run our state, and at the same time give more Texans a chance to participate in their friends’ and loved ones’ ceremony. Well done.

  2. Since that happened, I have heard that hundreds of thousands of hetersexual marriages have fallen apart in Texas. It seems that these two dudes sucked the sanctity right out of the straight marriage market.

Of course, next week someone will wed a elephant via skype…..(please let it be me and Jenny)

  4. Interesting story – did you know that a few states – including Texas – allow marriage by proxy? In other words, another person is appointed to stand in for the bride or groom, or both. I don’t know whether DC allows proxy marriages, but if so, and both spouses-to-be appointed proxies who were in DC, then certainly they could get married while in Texas, watching their proxies participate in the ceremony elsewhere in their behalves.

I didn’t realize that Obama was a “bigoted fundie” either. On what do you base that (entirely random) assessment regarding marriage equality in Texas? As opposed to those who are “tolerant”?

  7. @MC and Doug
he’s a fundie, just not a christian fundie (Come on it’s not a comment section if someone doesn’t make an “Obama’s a Muslim” reference)

As far as bigoted well he did campaign on ending DOMA then send out a federal attorney to defend it. He also promised to end DADT and while some progress has been made there it clearly went straight to the back burner as soon as the votes were cast.

  8. @Doug, surely you didn’t mistake “OMG” for a cry out to Obama? Is this your subtle way of coming out of the “Obama is the Messiah” closet? ;-)
