SMU Alumni Office to SMU Mail Service – Hey guys, is it possible to send those Alumni Recognition invites back for a little editing? Oh, no way, huh? Damn!

Wonder if the Congressional Black Scholarship Fund helped her out with SMU’s hefty tuition?

Now maybe you lovers of regulations will understand the incesteous conflict of interest that those $$$ regulations bring

Timing is everything. SMU could rethink this award and give EBJ the Distinguished Crook Award. That would seem more fiting since we now know she knew all about the awards and even requested the money be sent directly to her family members and not the school !!

Terrible. I move that SMU rescinds that honor immediately. It would greatly diminish the school’s reputation to include her as an exemplar for leadership, professionalism and ethical conduct. In light of recent events, SMU must take a stand. Whether it’s considered rude is irrelevant. This woman deserves no recognition, other than a write-up about a career-that-was as she is swept out of office in November.

I wonder what her fellow awardees think about? Eh, George W. Bramblett Jr., Gary T. Crum, and Stephen Mulholland?
@ 9:41 pm on September 7, 2010
You would think she would be to ashamed to receive any honor at this point. From the interviews I saw on different news shows, she only dug herself in deeper. Corruption is corruption, no matter what pretty face you paint over it. When people work so hard to rise above poverty and past racial problems, why, WHY can’t people just be honest? Now the letter from and signed by her requesting the scholarship money go directly to her grandchildren instead of to the school?????Want to explain that more clearly???? Can’t…..exactly.

And over on Unfair Park, Jim Schutze provides context and commentary about the institutional problems associated with members of Congress and foundation loopholes, of which Johnson and her ilk are only symptomatic. (http://bit.ly/bFweDN) The blatant disregard for any standard of ethics among (apparently) many elected officials just floors me. At any point, do lawmakers stop to consider…anything? They don’t read bills, and they’re rarely in touch with constituents (if they don’t try to avoid them altogether). No wonder this is, as many have said, an anti-incumbent year. Please, PLEASE let there be term limits coming down the pike. Career politics must end. And Eddie Bernice Johnson can be the first to go. Clearly it’s time.

That’s why SMU is known as “Harvard of the South.”
Go get ‘em boys!

Joe Barton gets his award next year.

@BL:
If you think EBJ is going to lose the November election, I would suggest you are misreading the situation.

Must be the same committee that turned down June’s two recruits late this summer!

Maybe if she’d ordered the torture of prisoners, she’d be getting a library instead of just a plaque.

I second what “That One” said . . . why would this surprise us?

@B.L.Powell: You write, “It would greatly diminish the school’s reputation to include her as an exemplar for leadership, professionalism and ethical conduct.”
That’s SO funny, but I don’t think you meant it that way. See: SMU’s conduct toward condo owners whose land SMU wants, SMU’s treatment of its faculty with respect to the Bush library, SMU’s concealment from students and the public of the drug and rape problems that are rampant on its campus, etc.

It would be a lot more satisfying to see their heads on pikes.
@ 6:43 pm on September 8, 2010
Come on. The faculty was informed and its opinions were respected by Pres. Turner. In fact, the Faculty Senate approved the building of the Bush library. Pres Turner gave a monthly report to Faculty Senate. Also, the condo owners got way too much money for the junky apartments they were living in.

This is absolutely hilarious! SMU has now sunk from a tier 2 school to to tier 3. If it weren’t for the tuition, they would rank right up there with Brookhaven or CCCC.
@ 9:56 am on September 9, 2010
Apparently EBJ is not the only one. Here is another CBC Scholarship controversy.
Well what has Ms Johnson done to deserve this award?
Oh thats right she has a no bid contract for the Dallas Lovefield Concessions—- she gave scholarship money to her family instead of her constituents….
What ethics is Dallas ISD or SMU for that matter teaching, that continues to get her reelected???
@ 4:22 pm on September 14, 2010
WLT, Sept25,2:00pm I am going to the SMU awards dinner and I might have to walk out on EBJ award speech. What is SMU thinking???
@ 2:02 pm on September 25, 2010
Is she still recieving the award? I do not see her on their list.
@ 11:49 am on September 27, 2010
@SMU loves Crooks: SMU is Tier 1.
@ 4:48 pm on September 27, 2010
I read that EBJ has a scheduling conflict for this award and won’t be attending—she won’t receive it if she is not actually in attendance——-
Guess that someone told her about these comments–
