Unidentified Flying Objects Heard Near Love Field

In today’s FB version of “Anything You Ever Wanted to Know,” a question from the nation:

Could you ask if anyone knows what was going on Saturday the 23rd at 2pm around the Love Field area?  I was convinced a plane was going to crash in my front yard the noise was so loud. The plane(s) flew over 2 to 3 times at extremely low altitude.  My neighbor said he saw 2 military jets.

My first thought is that the Frontiers of Flight Museum was flying around their historic birds again, though I couldn’t find any event announcements on their website. Thought number two: maybe a few of those military cargo jets that sometimes careen over Hollywood Ave. after 10 p.m. were landing at Love Field. But this is all speculation. So, dear informed readers, please share if have info.

  1. The jets were pursing “lights” in the low sky over Dallas. As it turns out, the “lights” were the reflection of the sun off the shimmering Trinity River where the bank has been reworked under the Calatrava Bridge. Before, the reflection of the winter sun would bounce off the bank, but now, the reflections have no obstacle and appear as a disk or a series of disks in the afternoon sky. And, atmospheric conditions on Saturday were such that a low complex of high pressure compacted the sounds of the nearby freeway into a “jet-like roar.” This also disturbed the rookery near Parkland.

  2. “pursuing,” not “pursing.” Someimes one of the fallouts of this situation is a loss of consoants…See?

  3. 2 F16s and an F15 dropped out of the low ceiling over my house (northern UP) with gear down. Looked like final approach to Love Field.

  4. Put on your tinfoil hat to read this. Those aircraft could be with Project Gayfeather. NAWC-23 is operated out of Love Field. It is a DoD black program that uses aircraft without tail numbers. Most noted are the P-3 Orions that fly almost daily from Love Field. They lack tail numbers, serial numbers and all distinguishing markings other than a muted Navy star insignia. They are fitted with electronic evesdropping equipment and countermeasures. I have no idea where they go or what they do but some believe they fly round trip south of the border on missions and then come back. Raytheon has a skunk works at Love Field where they work on the aircraft. Sometimes oddball planes show up there to be worked on too.

  5. OK, Bill is right. I was trying to help the government obscure this project by suggesting light reflecting off the Trinity. But, truth is, there’s a secret program of human replacement dynamics underway at Love Field. Aliens are re-fitted at Love to stand in for humans. So far they’ve got the mayor, one or two constables and the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

  6. Love Field ops indicated that there were about 8 F-18 using the airport on Saturday.

  7. I heard them in Midway Hollow on Saturday. They take off and land from Love every now and then. Figured since the Emergency Broadcast System wasn’t activated, it was only a test and not an attack on George W. Bush.

  8. I saw one of them, twin engine fighter jet, but I didn’t have a good enough view to ID it. If Eric ID’d an F15, that would fit with what I spotted. Yeah it’s loud – America, _ _ _ _ yeah!

  9. Bill,
Take off the tinfoil hat. It’s been the practice in the past for a P3 Orion to drop by Love Field to pick up Naval Reservists and fly them to Gulf Coast bases for weekend duty. I presume that is still going on.
As to the F18s (not F16s or an F15), Love Field frequently gets military transients. I’ve seen about everything including a pair of Harriers a few years ago that performed nifty vertical landings.

  10. I saw a few F18s on final the day before the TX/OU game back in October. I just assumed they were going to be involved in a flyover before the game. They were loud as h*ll.

  11. I saw two F/A-18’s with landing gears down flying tandem and slow at low altitude heading W/ NW along Lemmon on Sunday afternoon.

  12. Two military jets flew really low from Northwest to Southeast over Love Field on 02/18/2011 around 1900 hours. Another flew over making a turn into Love field. Really loud.
