Making Dallas Even Better

How Much Does a Window Washer Make?

A glorious day at D Magazine HQ! Our building is getting its windows washed. I am fascinated by these guys — mainly because if that were the only way I could feed my family, I would have to find a way to tell my family that they were going to starve. Just watching the window washers swinging on their seemingly rickety rope rigs gives me the fantods. Anyone know what these fellows make?

If you don’t want to read the entire Washington Post Q&A, here’s the answer:

Window washer says they make $15 to $16 an hour.

Not nearly enough. I get queasy just watching them from the indoor comfort of the downtown high rise where I work.

I love window washing day. Think it would be cool to do it one day.

I just want to know what a “fantod” is…

At one point we were insuring them at 100% of payroll. If they made $600/wk, then workers comp insurance cost another $600/wk on top.

Not sure what rates or carriers you were using, but you were getting hosed and paying almost twice the standard state rate.
