Nightmare On Marilla St.? Budget Cut Time At City Hall

The city of Dallas wants to slash its budget in the face of a projected $100 million deficit. Here’s a good place to start: Nix the $165,000 diverted from reserve funds to enforce that People’s Republic no-smoking ordinance they jammed down our gullets. But, hey, Marilla Streeet must be rife with economizing potential. Anybody else got any ideas?

  1. How much will it cost to service the bonds for the $550 million city owned hotel project?

How much has the city already spent on the hotel? (It’s $75.7 million)

  3. Here’s one idea: get the Legislature to require public disclosure of commercial property sales prices. That would allow appraisal districts to more accurately value property (remember the convention center hotel site discrepancy?) Why should only residential owners pay based on real market value?

  4. The budget is like a cake being baked in the oven — it’s still changing.

  5. Last year it was $50M and they ended up balanced. It makes good headline fodder but it will get worked out somehow.

  6. Easy. Do away with the funds for the smoker snitches, and amend the antismoker ordinance to license bars, pool halls, and restaurants that want to allow indoor smoking for a fee.
