DMN Layoffs Begin

We heard earlier today that a former colleague, Paige Phelps, was laid off this morning. Apparently, there are others being notified across the building today, including David Hinojosa in the sports department. Check this site throughout the day for updates.

UPDATE: From the the folks doing the layoffing.

Very sad day. Lovely person and terrific writer Joyce Saenz Harris is also gone. Very best of luck to you all.

What is the DMN thinking? Isn’t Joyce Harris the only food writer they have left?

Jacquielynn Floyd, Who is “manfully accepting responsibility” in your building? Where are the apologies – to exiting employees, staying employees, shareholders, readers and, the advertisers who were given inflated circulation figures a few years back?

    Eric, Whose watching the watchdog?

The Belo Cos. think stock is the product.

Brad – Bill Addison is still there (I hope and until we hear otherwise).

If none of those lay-offs came from the bloated 15-person opinions staff, I’ll be needing to kick something.

I’m only a press observer, but its a sad day for journalism when a high school football beat writer gets canned. Not that the DMN HS sports coverage was all that great past the big schools, but I thought David Hinojosa covered the exurban schools decently. Hopefully some editor for a real Texas newspaper will pick him up.

Get ready to kick something Bethany — the bloated op-ed staff wasn’t cut.

    oops. Who’s.

  • Brad Thedinger

Bill Addison is an excellent writer but he does not write for the Food/Taste section. He is the dining critic.

    But what to kick?

    How about a cue cat?

The EvilAllisonEmpire ™ should rehire Paige Phelps. She turned into a really good real-estate reporter. (Although the real estate guy now at PCP also is very good.)
