Weird. We Were Just Talking About How Crazy Dale Hansen Is.

Didn’t see this when it happened, but I’m glad someone caught it when Dale Hansen suggested the Cowboys sign Osama Bin Laden, just so the sports-blogging world could be exposed to his temperamental lunacy. Says Michael David Smith at AOL’s FanHouse: “I’m not familiar with Hansen’s work, but based on this video clip, I’d have to conclude that he’s unhinged.” No, Mike, I’d say you’re pretty much up to speed.

UPDATE: A fingers-of-fury-having FBvian pointed me toward better video here.

Yeah, I heard it last night, and nearly anointed my laptop with beer.

    The exact quote:
“If character really doesn’t matter, why don’t they sign Osama bin Laden to play wide receiver? They need one. and he’s six four and we know nobody can catch him.”

  • Jb

It’s the beggining of May sweeps and I’m not sure even Dale believes his own B.S. anymore. Does anyone else get the feeling that Pete Delkus and Dale are going to eventuallly come to blows with John Mcaa winding up the unwitting victim of a flatter face?

  • Harvey Lacey

I love it. Just about the time I think I’m not going to like Hansen any more he comes up with a humdinger and I love him all over again.

  • the amanda

It’s a great quote, and an even better idea for Jerry.

  • Russ

I understand the point of wanting a team with character guys. But the righteous indignation feels disproportionate to this Pacman Jones trade. Especially since Hansen has canonized Jimmy Johnson, who won Super Bowls with frequent customers of the notorious “White House.”

It’s the same tired, overblown reaction we heard after the Cowboys signed Terry Glenn, then Terrell Owens and then Tank Johnson. They have been no more a distraction for the Cowboys than Tony Romo’s frolics with Hollywood sirens. If Pacman flames out, he’ll get cut, and the team will move on. Seems worth the gamble, if we’re talking Xs and Os.

At least Jerry Jones is trying — unlike Tom Hicks and the Rangers. Loads of character guys out there in Arlington, and all it seems to get fans are increased ticket prices and empty promises of success.

I wrote and called the station to tell them how brilliant I thought that Hansen piece was. It was gospel truth being delivered to a stnned Comboy congregation. Yadayadayada about this being the smae ole same ole. It wasn’t. This was s serious throw-down–the-gauntlet about pro sport franchise whoredom. Make no mistake, I am a huge Tony/Cowboy fan. But this was beyond disgraceful. And the fact that it played out like biz per usual merited outrage. And as the ads say: Hansen delivers.

Well done, Zac. Thank you for this bit of Friday afternoon gold.

  • dave little

    that is awesome.

  • houston

HANSON LIVES. You go Dale. Jerry needs someone to tell him he is wearing no clothes.

  • Spamboy

I think that Bigfoot would be a better signing.

  • Left of Center

    Fantastic.

Let’s be honest — Dale is a jackxxx. The sports segment on Ch 8 news is no longer about sports stories, but rather about Dale’s immense ego.

If you have any doubt about what a jerk he is, see this link:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecVDPXyxHL4

When he was on the Ticket, his show was 5% sports, 95% what is bothering Dale. That usually involved the fact that the screeners at DFW did not recognize him and actually treated him like everyone else. Or, the patrolman along I-35 gave him a speeding ticket even though he is DALE FUXXING HANSEN. Or, how he had to wait longer than two minutes to get seated at a popular restaurant.

Do I like the signing of Pacman? Not really. But don’t use this as an excuse to trash Jerry Jones with the insult that the Cowboy teams of the golden era were all choirboys and that Jerry is running a madhouse at Valley Ranch. The fact is the golden era of the Cowboys had problems too – remember Thomas “Hollywood” Henderson, Lance Rentzel, Bob Hayes and Rafael Septien?

And hey Dale, if your thought is that organizations should not hired people with baggage — would that also include not hiring people who are known for, and often brag about, drinking large quantities of alcohol on a regular bases? Kinda like you, Dale?

I respect your right to complain about Jerry, but you do it so often you come off sounding like a jilted lover.

The fact is that the Jones family are very active in many worthy causes and have given so much back to our community. Jerry single handily made the Salvation Army fundraiser on Thanksgiving an incredible success.

Dale, I suggest you spend less time as Louie’s before your newscasts. Or, maybe its time to give your job to a real journalist like George Riba.

To quote Dean Wormer: “Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life.”

  • Left of Center

Aren’t all things on the Ticket 5% sports and 95% something else?

  • BLM

    Oh yeah, good point.

  • Richard

He’s the best in the area and one of the few that isn’t worried about where his next paycheck will come.
As the media world changes, those in it are more skittish than ever, for well understood preservation reasons. He isn’t skittish, he still brings it. Go Dale.

  • AJ

Gloria Campos thinks Dale is a regular Richard Prior. Cripes, it ain’t that funny. It makes it even worse when someone tells a joke and then scripts “pause and smirk” in there for laughter.

If character is such a big deal, then I believe NYE hosts should not get blitzed before the big show. That wouldn’t show a lot of character in the host…right Dale?

  • Upstairs

Also, did anyone catch how he singled out the thousands of “black” men in prison…how the only difference between them and Pacman is talent, etc.? True, Pacman is black. But why the qualification? I thought that remark would generate a bit more controversy, but I guess not.

  • Kirk

It’s what sports commentary should be: Speaking Truth to Rich, Egomaniacal Psycopaths … whether that means the owners or the players.

  • Daniel

Having observed his demeanor at Louie’s on quite a few occasions, I must say that I’ve never seen a man so inflated by his own minor local celebrity. He is a pompous fool. This immensely unlikeable fellow just barely misses being unintentionally humorous in his Fred-Willardesquery. But oh, does he ever miss.

  • rio

Seriously, I’d prefer to watch a high school sophomore do the sports broadcast on Ch.8 than watch Hansen. He comes across exactly as Daniel and BLM have stated.

  • HSH

I actually listened to Dale last night (because I just no longer can stomach Babe Laufenberg et al) even though I too think he’s a bit too preachy. The analogy about the number of African American men in prison was about the hypocracy of professional sports. And the Osama bin Laden remark was hilarious. Jerry Jones answers only to money. But this one won’t be a source of pocket change. This one will cost him. And that’s a good thing. As to Jerry’s contribution to the Dallas community, give me a break. He’s no Ray Nasher or Stanley Marcus. He gives to get. Nothing more.

  • Russ

Josh Howard admitted he smoked pot. That’s illegal. Do we need to get rid of him now?

  • Big Tex

I’d be tempted to say that Hansen has lost it, but that would be implying that he ever had it to lose. He’s always been stuck on stupid.

  • Chris

Dale is a jack ass. And he has never liked Jerry, listening to his radio show years ago will remind you of that.

Dale, go back to your local watering hole.

  • Jerry

Dale still knows how to get those ratings…by being righteously indignant, but mostly just by talking about the Cowboys. What’s not to love about having a guy you’d love to shoot the bull with in a bar bring you the sports?

  • BLM

Not sure I would like shooting the bull in a bar with Hansen.

He reminds of me of that fat guy who sits at the end of the bar who has an opinion about everything, talks a big game, gets handsy with ****tail waitresses — then leaves a 5% tip.

With all the talk about Hansen coming from the folks at WFAA, it doesn’t sound like many people who really know Dale like him at all.
