Even though Paul is gone, and we still miss his vertical supremacy, unmodulated voice, and poor gambling judgment, I have a little reminder of him in my inbox every day. After reading his story on lexicographer Bryan Garner for our November issue, my inner word nerd led me to Garner’s site, which contains a link to sign up for a word usage tip of the day. The e-mails arrive each morning with a genuinely useful bit of information and examples of word misuse. They also contain quotes such as today’s gem:
“Communication is most complete when it proceeds from the smallest number of words—and indeed of syllables.” Jacques Barzun, Simple & Direct 196 (1975).
Okay. I can take a hint. (Eric are you reading this?)
