Articles about Performing Arts Center opening

Media Fun Day, Ctd. (More Pictures for Your Eyes of the Wyly and the Winspear)

We’ve returned to the office, where I can post a little easier. Here are some more photos from today’s media day at the AT&T Performing Arts Center. I’d say more than half of the 150 or so TV, radio, and print people in attendance hailed from beyond our burg’s borders. It was a good group. You can check out Zac’s Flickr page for his pics. You’ll see that we covered some of the same ground. That said, jump for the pretties.

Architect Explains Why There’s a Hole in the Wyly

WylyOne Arts Plaza has that big white square on the side, and the Hunt Oil Tower bulges out like a, well, like a giant H. So I guess it makes sense that downtown’s new Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre has a big rectangular hole at the top on its west side (at far left in this pic). At first I thought they just hadn’t finished the building yet. But I’ve learned since that it’s actually an important architectural feature. On the big media tour this morning, I asked the architect Rem Koolhaas–a tall, gaunt Dutchman who kept checking his cellphone–about the thinking behind the big hole. “You have to have some things where your interest can dwell for awhile,” he explained. Then he went back to checking his phone.

You know who ISN’T here? Skip Hollandsworth of Texas Monthly fame. You had to RSVP to get a lanyard like this one. Because Zac didn’t RSVP, they gave Skip’s plastic holder to Zac. That’s a burn!

Media Fun Day at Performing Arts Center

About 150 journalists (give or take) are at the Wyly right now to get the lowdown on the AT&T Performing Arts Center. Rem Koolhaas is in the house. So are Spencer de Grey, Norman Foster, and Joshua Prince-Ramus (who looks like he knows karate). Currently at the mic is Mayor Tom Leppert. Summary of his remarks: Dallas is totally awesome.

Tibetan Monks Play in the Sand at Crow Collection

Monks 1 Because the Arts District is our new neighborhood, I strolled on over to the Crow Collection of Asian Art to take in a little lunchtime culture. The museum has a group of Tibetan Buddhist monks from the Drepung Loseling Monastery constructing a mandala throughout this week. Those are millions of grains of sand that the monks are using to construct “the green Tara,” which, one of the monks explained to the 40 or so people gathered for a free noontime talk, is a “deity for accomplishment.”

Through meditation the monks cultivate an energy that they manifest into physical form through the sand, and “that energy has the potential to uproot all sufferings.” He left us with the impression that just viewing the mandala can make a person feel better.

Tibetan Monks at the Crow Collection This Week

Tibetan monks mandala2On Sunday, seven Tibetan monks from the Drepung Loseling Monastery in Atlanta began a mandala to celebrate new beginnings, in this case the opening of the AT&T Performing Arts Center this week. My one IPhone photo does no justice  to the ceremony (the nice pictures sent by the Crow Collection people were too big for the blog, or so WordPress tells me).

The intricate work on the mandala will continue all week on the second flow of the Crow Collection.  On Friday, there will be a prayer flag presentation ceremony at 6 pm, with viewing until midnight. On Saturday, the monks will conduct a shamala meditation sitting from 1 to 2 pm. On Sunday, the monks will conduct a closing ceremony in which the mandala is dismantled, reminding us of the impermanence of all things.

An Alternate Cover of D Magazine for Star Trek Fans

By now, surely, you have seen the cover of the October episode of the “print product.” I’ll tell you this was a tough one for us. We went through several iterations of the cover before we settled on the one that you’ve seen on the newsstand. Here’s a version that we almost went with (and that I kinda still wish we had). Here’s to you, 7 of 9. (And for those who are confused, here was my inspiration.)
