Stop what you’re doing and take four minutes to read it. Good stuff. Sample:

Every freaking day they wake up demanding to be fed again. And then, more likely than not, refusing to eat the meal you’ve prepared. Every day. There is no cycle, much less a break from the cycle. There is only the grind. I feel like I’m tour managing an endless tour with a band comprised of subliterate narcissists.

Jessica Simpson Pregnant, Probably http://frontburner.dmagazine.com/2011/10/21/jessica-simpson-pregnant-probably/ http://frontburner.dmagazine.com/2011/10/21/jessica-simpson-pregnant-probably/#comments Fri, 21 Oct 2011 19:52:56 +0000 Krista Nightengale http://frontburner.dmagazine.com/?p=58032 Magazines and blogs have been saying for weeks that Jessica Simpson is pregnant, but she’s kept silent. Some have reported that she wanted $500,000 in exchange for the story. Well, apparently she confirmed it to OK Magazine last night. The cover with the story will be out October 27. I’m just hoping there won’t be a reality TV show covering her pregnancy. Of course, if there is, I know someone who can do a great job recapping it.

Rev Run to Preach at Fellowship Church in Grapevine http://frontburner.dmagazine.com/2011/10/14/rev-run-to-preach-at-fellowship-church-in-grapevine/ http://frontburner.dmagazine.com/2011/10/14/rev-run-to-preach-at-fellowship-church-in-grapevine/#comments Sat, 15 Oct 2011 00:26:00 +0000 Christine Perez http://frontburner.dmagazine.com/?p=57615 Rev Run, aka Joseph Simmons

Rev Run, aka Joseph Simmons

Two months after hosting Soul Surfer’s Bethany Hamilton, Fellowship Church in Grapevine is bringing in another big-name guest speaker: Rev Run, founding member of the influential hip-hop group Run-D.M.C. (and, yes, a practicing minister). It’s part of a new series led by Ed Young, founding pastor of Fellowship, a local megachurch. (Full disclosure: I’m a member.)

The two initially connected via Twitter (@RevRunWisdom, @edyoung), after re-tweeting things the other had posted. “He’s an amazing guy, and we thought it would be a great way to get his life-change story out there,” Young said.

The series, called “Run to the House” (a play on The Rev’s MTV reality show, Run’s House), kicks off this weekend. According to Young, it will have a family-focused theme: “It’s about how the house is the church of God, and that when we run to the house, we know how to run our house.”

Rev Run, whose real name is Joseph Simmons (he’s the younger brother of Russell Simmons, co-founder of Def Jam Records and the creator of Phat Farm and other clothing lines), will speak with Young in Grapevine and Miami. (UPDATE: He will speak at the Oct. 22-23 services in Grapevine and Oct. 23 services in Miami.) Along with its home base, Fellowship has campuses in downtown Dallas, Plano, Fort Worth, and Miami. Simmons will be joined by his wife, Justine, with whom he wrote the book, Take Back Your Family: A Challenge to America’s Parents.

The Rev will be giving away signed pairs of sneakers (Adidas, of course), and likely will do some freestyle rapping—maybe even getting into a little battle with Young. The services also will feature special music. “We’ve written original hip hop songs about the family that are absolutely hilarious, but very deep, lyrically,” Young said.

Hamilton—the 21-year-old surfer whose story of returning to the sport after losing her left arm in a shark attack is the basis for the movie Soul Surfer—attracted a record-breaking 26,000 people to Fellowship’s Grapevine campus in August. Big crowds are expected for Rev Run, too. The service also will be available online beginning Oct. 24.

Dennis Quaid, Family Guy http://frontburner.dmagazine.com/2011/04/03/dennis-quaid-family-guy/ http://frontburner.dmagazine.com/2011/04/03/dennis-quaid-family-guy/#comments Sun, 03 Apr 2011 15:35:02 +0000 Glenn Hunter http://frontburner.dmagazine.com/?p=49861 Dennis Quaid

Dennis Quaid

Actor Dennis Quaid, who’s been through all the usual movie-star craziness, from addiction to tabloid divorce, seems to have turned into a poster boy for family values. The Houston-born Quaid, who turns 57 next weekend, has moved with his wife, Kimberly, and their 3-year-old twins, Thomas and Zoe, to Austin, where Kimberly is an agent in the family real estate business. But, can he make a go of it there? “I sure hope so. Or else, I’ve made a terrible mistake,” the actor laughed at NorthPark Center Saturday, walking the red carpet at the Dallas International Film Festival for his latest flick, called Soul Surfer. Hollywood’s just a phone call away, he said, and in Austin he can be “close to family. Plus, it’s a great place to live.”

Quaid’s also drawing on his family for creative inspiration, he said. In this latest film, which is based on a true story, he plays the father of teenage surfer Bethany Hamilton, who lost her left arm in a shark attack but overcame the ordeal to surf again. Quaid (pictured in photo by Jeanne Prejean) recalled how just 12 days after his twins were born, they were mistakenly given massive overdoses of a drug called heparin. “It could have been fatal. But through the power of prayer from a lot of people, they survived that, and we had a happy ending,” he said. “So, I could relate to the Hamilton family that way.”

Things to Do in Dallas Tonight: Dec. 8 http://frontburner.dmagazine.com/2010/12/08/things-to-do-in-dallas-tonight-dec-8/ http://frontburner.dmagazine.com/2010/12/08/things-to-do-in-dallas-tonight-dec-8/#comments Wed, 08 Dec 2010 17:03:02 +0000 Ryan Jones http://frontburner.dmagazine.com/?p=44578 It seems the winter chill has finally reached our fair city, and if a childhood of Looney Tunes-watching has taught me any lasting lessons, it’s that a Saint Bernard with a little barrel around his neck will mix you a martini when you’re lost in the cold. We’ll assume two things: 1) He does this because the martini would warm you up, and 2) any sort of alcohol will do the trick.

Based on those unfounded assumptions, we think you ought to head to the Grape this evening, where they’re hosting the second of their “Get Your Wine on Wednesdays” this month. Here’s the rub: Guest host (and champagne specialist) Loni Heyn is stopping by to pick out five sparkling wines, which will be paired with hors d’oeuvres for your palate’s pleasure. It’s only $25 a pop, and if you stick around for dinner, the Grape will gladly shave 15 percent off your food tab.

That sounds like the perfect, grown-up evening to me, but if you’ll have kids in tow tonight, take the jump for other options.

Might I suggest heading with the little ones to NorthPark Center? While you’re there, you can drop in for a photo with Santa, adopt a new best friend, or check out the toy-train exhibit that features 1,600 feet of winding track. And maybe – maybe – you can get a bit of early holiday shopping done.

Want more things to do in Dallas? Go here.

How Not to Get an Internship at D http://frontburner.dmagazine.com/2010/09/22/how-not-to-get-an-internship-at-d/ http://frontburner.dmagazine.com/2010/09/22/how-not-to-get-an-internship-at-d/#comments Wed, 22 Sep 2010 14:48:18 +0000 Krista Nightengale http://frontburner.dmagazine.com/?p=41353 My mom (love her dearly!) is a helicopter mom. And, quite frankly, from years 13-18, I thought she was the helicopter mom. I’ve since grown up and realized there are those who are worse. And I feel sorry for their kids because I understand what they’re going through. But, ladies and gentlemen, I do believe I have found the queen of helicopter moms. I’ll give you a sneak peak at a little convo I had with said helicopter mom, and you let me know if I’m correct.

HM: Hi. I’m calling on behalf of my daughter, a student in high school. I was wondering if she could have an internship at D Magazine.

Me: Oh, I’m really sorry. We don’t allow high school students to intern here. We’ve tried it in the past, and it just hasn’t worked out.

HM: That’s what WFAA said, too. But now she has an internship there this spring. Let me tell you about my daughter. She’s very smart, …. (We’ll skip this section. You can only listen to and remember so many credentials.)

Me: She does sound smart. And I’d be more than happy for her to come to the office and meet with a couple editors to talk about the industry.

HM: No. I’d like for her to have an internship. I’m going to keep pushing, because I really want my daughter to get all the experiences she possibly can before she graduates high school. Who are your supervisors?

Me: I’m sorry, but I head up the internship program. And I’m the one who makes the final decisions on editorial interns.

HM: Oh, well. Who’s in your position in Austin? Whom could I talk to there?

Me: (Confused and thinking maybe she’s asking about Texas Monthly) Um. Well. I don’t work for that company, so I don’t know.

HM: Well, where are D’s headquarters? Aren’t they located in Austin?

Me: D? As in D Magazine? No. Our headquarters are in Dallas.

HM: Oh. I didn’t know that. Well. I’m going to go ahead and fill out this application and submit. I hope you’ll have a change of heart, just like WFAA did.

We’ll just go ahead and end it there as the conversation was 10 minutes and 17 seconds long (though it felt like it lasted about two hours). I haven’t seen the application from the mom daughter, but I’m eagerly waiting. Oh, and WFAA, good luck!
