Even For $600,000, Top Chef: Texas Can’t Tell the Difference Between Dallas and San Antonio

Dallas, not San Antonio.

Dallas, not San Antonio.

Bravo’s Top Chef, you may have heard, has set its current season in Texas — namely rotating between the cities of San Antonio, Dallas, and Austin.  This is a departure from previous seasons which were each centered on a single city: San Francisco, Las Vegas, and New York among them.

The excuse for the change of pace is that Texas is just “too big” to have its season confined to one spot, but in reality the state tourism office paid Top Chef’s production company $600,000 to feature San Antonio plus two other Texas cities. That money, however, didn’t teach Bravo how to differentiate between these locations.

See Raya Ramsey Talk About D Magazine Valentine’s Picks While Seated Next to Lingerie

As noted previously, ShopTalk’s Raya Ramsey was on the telly early this morning.

WFAA Daybreak host Ron Corning got too caught up in his personal anecdote about the blue cheese chocolate at Dude, Sweet Chocolate and ran out of time to ask Raya about where she got the lingerie that she’s seated next to during the segment (much to Uncle Barky’s delight).

Don’t worry: Raya will explain more about the “sassy” undergarments a little later on ShopTalk.

You can find all our Dallas Valentine’s recommendations here.

If You See This Pig …

Apparently there are now (or always have been, I don’t know) feral hogs roaming White Rock Lake. One was actually sighted near Lawther and Northwest Highway recently.

Fact: Feral hogs are hairy. Another fact: I once copy edited a story where the writer kept referring to Farrell Hogs. It took me most of the article to figure out it wasn’t a person. Context is your friend.

And another fact, just because I adore linking to this because of the last paragraph: If a feral hog and a coyote faced off, don’t necessarily put your money on the coyote.

What Shawn Marion Will Serve Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom at His Welcome-to-Dallas Dinner

The internet is abuzz with news that Dallas Mavericks player Shawn Marion will host a “Welcome Reception to Dallas” on Jan. 26 for Khloe Kardashian and his new teammates Lamar Odom, Vince Carter, and Delonte West.

I’m sure Tim’s invite is in the mail, as evidenced by the photo above that proves that he is a close, personal friend of Shawn Marion. Here’s what he’ll be eating, according to the just-received press release:

Nick & Sam’s Steakhouse Executive Chef/Partner Samir Dhurandhar is designing the reception’s menu. According to Dhurandhar, “my reception menu will be inspired from the menu of Khloe and Lamar Odom’s wedding. I have contacted my friend, Todd Hatoff from Allen Brothers, who is personally sending us the Wagyu Kobe Beef for the Wagyu sliders. In addition to the sliders, a few ‘for sures’ include my version of chilled heirloom tomato soup with burrata, jumbo shrimp cocktails, our signature fried lobster, lamb chops and other surprises.”

Selecting the most memorable images from D Magazine this year was tough. At first it was going to be a list of the 10 best, but that proved impossible. Then it was going to be the best 12 or 13, but that still left too many out. So I included even more.

Rhett Miller on Fatherhood

An alert FrontBurnervian points us to this essay by Old 97’s frontman Rhett Miller about what it’s like to be a rockstar and a father. Stop what you’re doing and take four minutes to read it. Good stuff. Sample:

Every freaking day they wake up demanding to be fed again. And then, more likely than not, refusing to eat the meal you’ve prepared. Every day. There is no cycle, much less a break from the cycle. There is only the grind. I feel like I’m tour managing an endless tour with a band comprised of subliterate narcissists.

Often, while in the middle of a deep sleep, I start dreaming about food—sandwiches, doughnuts, steak, peanut butter cups, gnocchi. It doesn’t matter what it is, I dream about it all. Slowly, I start to wake up. And that’s when I realize my blood sugar is low. I stumble into the kitchen, and in a half-conscious state, dig through the pantry and eat. The next morning, I go back to the kitchen and am ashamed of what happened during my “midnight feeding.” It’s amazing what combinations of food seem like a good idea when I’m half-awake. (Apparently, peanut butter goes with everything.)

This is just what life’s like for me, a type 1 diabetic. I was diagnosed when I was 3. Two-year-old Faith Wilson was diagnosed when she was 9-months-old. She doesn’t dream about food when she’s low. She doesn’t wake up. Life for her, her siblings, and her parents has been a nightmare. But things got just a bit easier a year ago when the Wilsons got Ruby, a British Lab.

Sorry to hear that the Women’s Museum at Fair Park is closing, (even if we sometimes questioned its choices).

On a positive note, Fair Park itself was given a nice distinction today, called one of the country’s great public spaces.

But what matters most, in enjoying that gem of a place — as the photo above reminds us — is being able to wander around on a gorgeous, sunny day, corn dog in hand.

See our daily State Fair guide and get going.

DJs, Dancing, Live Theater, Art, Movies, Food, and More: FrontRow Live Kicks Off on November 3

Art West, Inventor of Doritos, Dies: Art West was a marketing executive at Frito-Lay when he invented Doritos, the first national tortilla chip brand. He died this weekend at 97. A statement from West’s family says that they plan on “tossing Doritos chips in before they put the dirt over the urn.”

Is AMR Going Bankrupt? American Airlines’ parent company has only posted two profitable years in the last decade, its stock is at a one-year low, and Moody’s has just downgraded AMR’s stock outlook to “negative,” according to this report in the Star-Telegram. Some industry watchers believe the company is running out of cash, and when the “b-word” was raised during an investor conference, AMR’s treasurer “didn’t completely dismiss the possibility.”

Finally It’s Official: A&M Joins S.E.C: Yesterday, Texas A&M University announced that it will join NCAA’s Southeastern Conference beginning on July 1, 2012. Teams like Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Arkansas and others will begin massacring the Aggies on the football field beginning in the 2012-2013 season.

Anatomy of a D Magazine Cover Shoot

By now you’ve likely seen the “Best of Big D” cover image of Dirk Nowitzki taken by Billy Surface. Billy took the photo just two days after the Mavs had won the NBA Championship. We got about 10 minutes alone with Dirk in a makeshift studio of sorts that Billy had set up on the court of the AAC. Dirk was as friendly as you’ve been led to believe he is, but he was a little punchy. I think he’d had about three hours of sleep over the previous two nights, owing to general giddiness and some world-class carousing with the Larry O’Brien trophy.

As Billy was clicking away, his strobe lights flashing, I tried to get a smile out of Dirk. “Hey,” I said, “you know this shot is for the cover, right? You gotta lay it all on the court for us, Dirk.”

In that beautiful German accent of his, he replied, “So this time I beat out the pork jowls for the cover? What did I do to deserve that?”

It was a funny line that requires some explanation. Back in December 2009, Zac put together an oral history of a decade of Dirk in Dallas. Dirk sat for an interview and a photograph, which, with some digital magic, we turned into a throwback trading card. I was proud of how the whole thing came together. But each year in December, we publish our selections of the best new restaurants that have opened that year. So the cover in December 2009 was a picture of Bolsa’s Kurobuta pork jowls. Delicious but not Dirk.

I was stunned that he remembered with such detail the dish that, in his mind, had superseded him to land on our cover. This clearly explains why Dirk had to run off the court after Game 6 and cry in the locker room before he could compose himself enough to accept the MVP award. His hard work had finally paid off. After all those extra hours in the gym, after all the summers spent working out with Holger Geschwindner, he’d finally proven himself the equal of those pork jowls.
