I would like to announce a “material connection” between D Magazine and Red Bull. The new FTC rules on freebies for bloggers are very strict, and I wish to remain on the right side of the law [cough, cough]. So here’s the deal: moments ago, the Red Bull mini-fridge you see pictured was installed in our kitchen. It joins the ranks of the KitchenAid (toast), the Keurig (coffee), and, my favorite, the Hoshizaki (crushed ice and water). I am told the Red Bull mini-fridge will be stocked with free Red Bull — thereby giving rise to our “material connection.” I myself cannot drink caffeinated beverages, per doctor’s orders. And even if I could, I would not choose to drink Red Bull, on account of I think it tastes like cough syrup (which I have consumed in the past for recreational purposes, if you must know, but only because the brand I had on hand during that particular road trip had codeine in it, which Red Bull does not). Point is, though, someone who works for our company might in the future blog something that casts Red Bull in a favorable light. And I just wanted you to know that that person cannot be trusted. Because he’ll be high on free Red Bull. (I’m looking at you, Zac.)

… in the “Hall of Fame Level” bathrooms at the brand new broken in Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. No joke. Two fans clad in Michael Irvin throwback jerseys decided that all the excitement of a thoroughly lackluster win by Romo and the Boys could only be sated by a quickie in one of Jerry’s marble-tiled handicap bathroom stalls.

This definitely NSFW link will take you to the Deadspin post that includes video of the pair drunkenly going at it. The video is very short, but in IMHO the dude was over served and lacking in the imagination department. Is it wrong that I hear Brad Sham’s voice saying, “Irvin loves Irving Irvin,” every time I watch it?

Also, check out photographer Eliot Boney’s website. He’s the guy with the apropos name taking credit for the masterful camera work. No word yet on who the two Irvin wannabees are. My question: Where was security while this was going on?

Comments are on like Donkey Kong. Who’s got the best Chris Berman play-by-play?

This Friday evening, the Trinity Trust Foundation is throwing what it’s calling a “bridge fair” on the Continental Bridge to celebrate the progress being made on the Marget Hunt Hill Bridge (full release after the jump). Santiago Calatrava will be in attendance. The band Boys Named Sue will play, and the foundation promises other “delectable delights.” Tickets cost $150, a price point established, I believe, to keep Jim Schutze from attending. D Magazine is a media sponsor, so I’ll be there. Look for me wherever the delectable delights are located.

The Trinity Trust Announces “Bridging the Trinity” with Santiago Calatrava, Award-Winning Architect and Designer of the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge

DALLAS, Texas, September 18, 2009 – The Trinity Trust Foundation will host a Bridge Fair, “Bridging the Trinity,” celebrating the Santiago Calatrava signature Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge now under construction in the heart of Dallas. The landmark event will be held on the Continental Bridge on Friday, September 25, 2009, at 7:30 p.m. The evening will feature street artists, delectable delights, musical entertainment and surprise treats. Entertainment includes DJ Lucy Wrubel and the band Boys Named Sue.

Santiago Calatrava, an internationally acclaimed award-winning architect, artist and engineer, is an honored guest. Joining him will be Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert and the National Honorary Chairs U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison and Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson. Honorary Event Chairs are Mary McDermott Cook, Lyda Hill, Al Hill Jr. and Alinda Wikert. Lynn McBee is the Event Chair, and Christy Berry is the Host Committee Chair. Williams Brothers Construction is the Presenting Sponsor.

Dr. Gail Thomas, president of The Trinity Trust, said, “This remarkable Bridge Fair celebrates the progress of The Trinity project on the Continental Bridge, which will become a pedestrian bridge once the Margaret Hunt Hill suspension bridge is built. We will also celebrate our ‘Suspense is Building’ campaign to inform the community of this remarkable element of The Trinity project.”

As the designer of the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge, Santiago Calatrava visited Dallas earlier this year and shared his excitement about the arrival of the steel in Texas and what this bridge will do for Dallas, Texas and the United States.

“What makes these bridges unique is that they will become a part of the Dallas skyline,” Calatrava said. “They are the first steps of centering the city, with the Trinity River on both sides, and calling the city back to the river to become a central gathering place.”

The arrival of the first shipment of steel in Dallas is adding to the excitement, and more shipments will be arriving later this year. “The steel has arrived, and the people will become excited once they see the progress of this remarkable suspension bridge,” said Dr. Thomas.

The Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge is the first vehicular bridge designed by Calatrava in the United States. This world-class bridge will eventually connect Singleton Boulevard in West Dallas across the Trinity River to Woodall Rodgers (Spur 366) in downtown Dallas. This bridge’s central arch will reach 400 feet high upon completion. Pieces of the white arch, which arrived in late July, could begin being hoisted into place by the end of the year. Other elements include a 1,200-foot long span with miles of cable holding the bridge span in place. Once completed, the bridge will become Dallas’ signature landmark for The Trinity project and will replace the Continental Bridge, which will serve as the pedestrian bridge.

A second Calatrava Bridge—the Margaret McDermott Bridge—will start construction at a later date.

Mary McDermott Cook, chair of The Trinity Trust Foundation, said about Calatrava: “Santiago is a talented and brilliant architect and artist, having designed the Olympic Sports Complex in Athens, one I recently saw, and many buildings of great artistic significance. He’s also designed award-winning bridges around the globe, and he’s building the first [of] two vehicular bridges in the United States right here in Dallas, including my mom’s bridge, the Margaret McDermott Bridge.”

“Bridging the Trinity” Host Committee includes the following: Dolores and Larry Barzune; Hong and Jim Bass; Christy and Robby Berry; Laura and Dan Boeckman; Nancy and Robbie Briggs; Todd Fiscus and Rob Dailey; Jerri and Stuart Fitts; Ola and Randall Fojtasek; Margaret and Barry Hancock; Melissa and Trey Hill; Muffin and John Lemak; Carol and John Levy; Jennifer and Jim Lincoln; Nancy and Michael Lunceford; Bobby B. Lyle; Nancy Cain Marcus; Laura and Jack Matthews; Lynn and Allan McBee; Janie and Cappy McGarr; Ann Swisher and Michael McGehee; Laura and Butch McGregor; Megan and Casey McManemin; Pat and Bob Meckfessel; Karen and Jeff Morris; Nancy Perot Mulford; Alice and Erle Nye; Lillie and Phil Romano; Deedie and Rusty Rose; Kathi and Scott Shuford; Emily and Steve Summers; Gail and Bob Thomas; Fallon and Robie Vaughn.

A $2 billion public works project, The Trinity project is one of the largest urban developments in the nation stretching 20 miles through Dallas and encompassing 10,000 acres. Plans include a meandering river, downtown lakes, an island, wetlands, hike and bike trails, a whitewater course, riding paths and nature walks through the Great Trinity Forest. The Trinity River Audubon Center is already completed.

Media sponsors are D Magazine, D CEO and People Newspapers.

For more information and to purchase tickets to “Bridging the Trinity,” go to www.bridgingthetrinity.com. Tickets begin at $150 each, and underwriting opportunities are available. For more information, contact The Trinity Trust at 214.740.1616.

About The Trinity Trust Foundation and The Trinity Center:

The Trinity Trust raises private funds to implement the Balanced Vision Plan for The Trinity project in conjunction with the City of Dallas. The Trinity Trust has established The Trinity Center as the gathering place for all civic and non-profit groups working to revitalize the Trinity River in Dallas. It houses the offices of The Trinity Trust Foundation, Texas Horse Park, Groundwork Dallas and Trinity Strand Trail; and hosts meetings, workshops and events for these organizations and the Trinity Commons Foundation. The Trinity Center facilitates collaboration between these entities and the City of Dallas and encourages seamless integration of all the components of The Trinity project. I still love that thing. Highly recommended. Well, the guy who engraves the Duckbills (if you so choose) is a man named Ken Brown. He does calligraphic engraving with a dental drill, a process he taught himself. Well, you know who’s a loyal reader of the “print product”? Ken Brown is. After reading this story about how Spider Monkey and I nearly drowned in the Trinity (slight exaggeration), Ken sent over an engraved bottle of wine (pictured). Here’s the poem writ thereon:

A toast to the Trinity/ And surrounding muck./ A toast to the Matrix/ That didn’t get stuck./ A toast to the Monkey,/ While shooting the news,/ With brute force she pushed/ And Tim saved his shoes!

Now all I have to do is drink this thing before Spider Monkey reads this post and demands her share.

On Wednesday, I will turn [redacted] years old. I’m very old. You know what old people like to do? Look back. In my case, I wanted to go way back–to Medieval Times. And so, a few merry maidens and one princely soul accompanied me there last Saturday night. Never been? I hadn’t either. It’s magical. This is a place where lords and ladies enjoy motley menus—tomato soup, garlic bread, a chicken leg, and rib—sans silverware. It’s a little piece of paradise where the Pepsi flows like champagne, and despite the fear of lice and germs, the general public dons headbands and costumes without question. And you know what? It was fabulous. Jump for a few of my favorite things.

First of all, to do things right, you’re probably going to spend a lot of florins at this joint. My party of six began with our royal portrait. Please note that the photographer finds no part of his job amusing. Don’t attempt to take pictures in the green-screen area. Don’t even think about trying to wear your crown a bit askew. He’s in no mood for your funny business. Oh. And after three attempts this was what he claimed was our best photo. Look at it. It’s terrible. My theory: our uninvited jokes led to this punishment.

I really didn’t know what to expect with regard to the joust, but it’s a big production. Lots of actors, stunts, animals–unbelievable. The whole place goes nuts–cheering and waving flags ($1 each) for their assigned knight. And not to get all Garden State on you, but, yeah, the boys who work there are cute. Surprisingly so. We spoke to the “black-and-white” knight for a spell, and he has worked at Medieval Times for eight years. Eight years? Aren’t you dying to know what kind of money a knight makes? I am, but I was too busy pretending to kiss a suit of armor for a future Facebook profile pic to ask personal questions.

One more thing: the place was packed with people of all ages. Our attempt to go to an earlier show failed because it was sold out. People love them some Medieval Times. Even in a bad economy, apparently.

If you’re having a birthday, you can get a break if you go here to register. And if you take a trip to the smoking porch, tell the falconer to keep his chin up—things will get better eventually. After all, he works at the greatest place ever!

For once, the TABC seems to be taking a complaint about its overbearing misuse of police powers seriously. Administrator Alan Steen actually placed a call to the Dallas Voice this week to apologize for the Rainbow Lounge raid. He used that opportunity to announce the supervisor’s well-deserved retirement and the reassignment of the two agents, whose actions are still being investigated. Steen had previously acknowledged that bar patron Chad Gibson had been injured while in TABC custody

Perhaps now the TABC’s disasasterous Sales to Intoxicated Persons program (you just knew they’d have to call it SIP), which was the impetus for the raid, will finally be put out of its misery. The policy has been roundly criticized for enforcement that is intrusive, subjective, and often violent, and it has not held up well in the courts. When a joint legislative committee began looking into it three years ago, Steen said he would “delay” any more enforcement. Apparently the delay ended soon after. Maybe now he’ll decide to ax the program for good. (Note that the linked-to article begins “It has been a tough couple of weeks for the folks at the Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission…” and it is dated April 28, 2006.)

I’m reading this story about how North Texas needs more water. About how we’ve got about 6 million residents right now, but come 2060, we’ll have more than 13 million. About how we’re looking around to dam up some rivers to accommodate all those new residents (and their lawns). About how the people on those rivers don’t particularly cotton to our scheming. And I’m thinking: gee, this sounds familiar.

Here’s looking at you, Rod Davis.
