D: The Broadcast: A Q&A With Midge Hill

Midge Hill

Midge Hill

A few weeks back, Tim interviewed four of the ladies from The Broadcast, one of our little spots of heaven over on KTXD. Pat Smith talked about Lamar Odom, Suzie Humphreys revealed that she almost gave birth in a helicopter, Lisa Pineiro told Tim about her two novels, and Courtney Kerr let on about some Most Eligible Dallas secrets.

Today, I get special co-host Midge Hill, who chatted while drinking lemonade from her couch. She invited me to join.

Bradford Pearson: So, we’ve done some other Q&As with some of the other ladies that are hosting The Broadcast, and we thought that you deserved a shot to have one as well.

Midge Hill: Yeah, I know. So I’m like the substitute. Are you the substitute too?

BP: I guess so. Tim’s out doing something else, so I guess we can commiserate in our substitution. That’s a good question to start out with. Will you just be substituting for Suzie or for when any of the hosts can’t come in?

MH: Nobody tells me anything, Brad! I don’t know, but if somebody else gets sick, it may be that the thing will fall on me, or maybe they’ll just do it with three people. Don’t know. Nobody told me.

Ed Bark’s Take on D: The Broadcast

Someone told me that Ed Bark, former TV critic for the Dallas Morning News, wrote “a really mean review of the show.” I’ve tangled with Bark before. I was looking forward to a good hate-read and an opportunity to fire back at him here on FrontBurner. You know what, though? I agree with everything he said. Yes, The Broadcast and D Living are a bit of an odd fit with the rest of KTXD’s lineup. That discordance will fade as we come up with ideas for new shows in the coming months (and years). And, yes, Suzie Humphreys is the sea anchor of the show. Or, as Bark put it: “Humphreys serves as the Ma Barker of this mix, but with a lot more starch in her. And she knows a crock when she sees or hears one, which viewers witnessed very early in the game Monday. It’s [hard] to imagine what D: The Broadcast would be without Humphreys. It might just float away.

This morning’s show brought a couple more examples of Humphreys’ greatness. At one point, Courtney Kerr said something about a hashtag. Humphreys jumped in and said, “Now, what is a hashtag?” Coming out of anyone else’s mouth, the question would have sounded stupid, out of touch. But Humphreys’ twangy delivery was shot through with something else. Call it wisdom. To my ear, her questions sounded like: “What the heck are you saying? Do you realize how silly people sound when they pepper polite conversation with neologisms like ‘hashtag’? This, too, shall pass.”

Anyway, I’m with Bark. Humphreys is the early leader in the clubhouse. Once more: for U-Verse, DirecTV, and Dish customers, it’s on Channel 47. On Time Warner, it’s Channel 24. Verizon is Channel 18. Charter is 22.

Snap Judgment: A Totally Biased Review of D: The Broadcast

I can’t be trusted. That much is clear. If I say something nice about the first episode of D: The Broadcast, it will come across as whorish promotion of another D Empire brand extension. So I won’t say that I thought the ladies did a swell job this morning and that Suzie Humphreys is my favorite part of the show (Suzie to Courtney Kerr: “Listen, I’m your mother for one hour every day.”) and that the sets looked great, especially the kitchen. No, instead, I will borrow a page from the U.S. military. In the military, they do something called an AAR, which is an initialism that stands for “after-action review.” Say you get ambushed by the enemy and an intense three-hour firefight ensues. After everything has calmed down a bit, back at base, you get some juice boxes and you talk about what happened and how you can handle that sort of situation better if it should arise again. Here, then, is the AAR on the first episode of The Broadcast:

– Here’s a fun game for the Table Talk segment: every time Courtney Kerr picks up her sheaf of papers and taps them on the desk to straighten them out, take a shot of Grand Marnier. This is her go-to move on the anchor desk. The show starts at 9 a.m. You’ll be drunk by 9:07.

– If they’re going to leave the ladies’ mics up as we go to commercial so that we can hear their private conversations, then have them say something interesting. Suggestion: Pat Smith mutters under her breath, “Emmitt told me yesterday that he hates Troy. Never could stand him when they played together.”

– In the kitchen, when Dean Fearing was cooking halibut, it would have been nice to see the ingredients. If a remote-controlled camera on a boom isn’t in the budget, just ask Courtney Kerr to stand on the cook top and use a handheld.

Looking forward to tomorrow. Again: for U-Verse, DirecTV, and Dish customers, it’s on Channel 47. On Time Warner, it’s Channel 24. Verizon is Channel 18. Charter is 22.

D: The Broadcast: A Q&A With Pat Smith

You know the drill by now. Last year, we announced a partnership with London Broadcasting, which owns KTXD, a local channel that, with our help, is about to get a whole lot more local. On February 18, we are launching a morning show called D: The Broadcast. It will be co-hosted by four ladies whose names you likely know. Think The View – only not. This week on FrontBurner, I’ve been rolling out a new Q&A each day with a different host. On Monday, Courtney Kerr engaged in a little afternoon delight. Tuesday, I talked Fifty Shades of Grey with Lisa Pineiro. Yesterday, Suzie Humphreys revealed that she almost gave birth in a helicopter. Today we talk with the smoking hot Pat Smith, whose husband apparently played football or something.

Tim Rogers: I’m led to believe that our receptionist was falling down on the job and you had a hard time getting a live human up here.

Pat Smith: I kept trying, but you’ll see I left a message, and I just kept trying back and I said, “God, didn’t know what to do.”

TR: Well, I am going to have a stern talking-to with somebody.

PS: No, it’s fine! I just didn’t want you to think I left you hanging.

TR: Trust me, I’ve been trashing your name all over the office. “You know Pat Smith was supposed to call me 45 minutes ago.” That’s exactly what I’ve been saying. So you ready to do this?

PS: I’m ready.

TR: I know you were Miss USA ‘94 first runner-up, you’ve done a bunch of stuff with Access Hollywood, and you’ve been on Beverly Hills 90210, but the highlight of your career has to be making it as one of The 10 Most Beautiful in D Magazine. Tell me how that changed your entire life. It must be night and day. You woke up one day and saw yourself in the magazine, and then everything was different.

PS: Well, no. I think just being asked to do it first of all was, like, scary.

Tim Rogers: Alright, are you ready for a hard-hitting Q&A?

Suzie Humphreys: Yeah, I hear you’re a toughie.

TR: My reputation precedes me. Who’s called me a toughie?

SH: I’m not saying.

TR: [laughs] That’s because you just made that up.

SH: No, I didn’t. We were talking about you yesterday around the table at the meeting that we had at KTXD, and one of the girls said, “I didn’t know he was taking everything down. I mean, right out of the gate, man, everything I was saying, and I said something that was kind of strong. And, boy, he just put that in there.” But we were all laughing about it. It was real cute.

TR: We’re going to talk a little bit about the show and about your relationship with these other ladies, but first I want to ask about your work with Ron Chapman. You were his co-host for 20 years, but you never broadcasted from the studio with him, and that blows my mind. I want you to explain to me how that worked.

Tim Rogers: [I had promised to call her “first thing in the morning” but didn’t ring till 10:15.] This is kind of first thing in the morning, isn’t it?

Lisa Pineiro: Are you kidding me? I’m a morning person!

TR: What does that mean? What time do you wake up?

LP: I wake up at the crack of dawn. You remember I had to do that morning show, and I had to wake up at 2:30 a.m. every morning.

TR: And you still haven’t shaken that off?

LP: Well, I go through these peaks and valleys with it. I am crazy. I don’t know. The truth of it is that last night I had horrible night’s sleep. I went to bed at 4 a.m. and just woke up an hour ago.

TR: So how long has it been since Channel 11 made the absolutely horrendously stupid mistake and let you go?

LP: Aw, I love the way you put that. Let’s see, my last day was the end of May last year.

Let’s dive right in:

Tim Rogers: You ready for some real journalism-style Q&A here?

Courtney Kerr: Oh, are you going to bust my balls?

TR: Bust your balls? What could I possibly bust your balls about?

CK: (laughs) I’ve seen your articles before, Tim! I’m no stranger to your literary –

TR: I have no idea what you’re talking about.

CK: Oh you stop it. Get after it.

TR: Your blog, What Courtney Wore, as I understand it, you put on clothes, and then you take pictures of clothes.

CK: How narcissistic is that?

TR: And people look at your clothes.
