Selecting the most memorable images from D Magazine this year was tough. At first it was going to be a list of the 10 best, but that proved impossible. Then it was going to be the best 12 or 13, but that still left too many out. So I included even more.
See for yourself. Click here for my review of the best pictures of the year.

Cedar Springs' Halloween Block Party's a top spot for costume watching. (photography by Christina Barany)
Photos from this weekend’s Halloween festivities are here. My personal favorites awards go to the Oregon Trail couple with dysentary and measles, the twisted Mad Hatters, a couple of Pop Tarts, the gay pack of flamingos (aka: “The Flamingays”), the troll doll duo (rhinestone bellybuttons included), a box of Franzia, a frightening Joker chick, and the Ninja Turtle girl. Enjoy all of our weekend’s Party Pics and stay tuned for more tomorrow.
Oh and we’ve got more happy Rangers fans photos (pre-loss, of course) from Ten Sports Grill. So there’s that.
"Getting ready for game. It's 2:00 EST. Psyched."
UPDATE, 2:33 pm: It’s raining in Detroit. We could be in for another delay.
Texas Rangers’ radio play-by-play announcer Eric Nadel is at Comerica Park in Detroit where the Rangers are getting ready to embarrass the Detroit Tigers. He sent a few pictures he took as he walked into the park. I urge you to turn off the sound on your TV and tune in to 103.3 ESPN Radio and listen to Nadel and (Tim’s buddy) Steve Busby call the game. First pitch at 3:19 PM CST. GO RANGERS!

We added some new categories to our Best of Big D issue this year, many of them geared towards families with children. One of these new honorees was Critterman, whom we named the Best Children’s Entertainer.
Intern Kelsy McCraw caught up with Critterman, aka Dave Kleven, to see how an ordinary boy from Minnesota came to delight Dallas-area kids with his exotic animals. Between shows for 100-plus children at the Rockwall County Library with his “Texas Tails” program, which features an American alligator named Steve and a ferret named Slinky, he explained why it takes a kid-at-heart to keep the attention of pint-sized audiences. Here’s the video Kelsy made:
I’ve been going to Good Records for some time now, though I wouldn’t call myself an expert on the store. Given its recognition as the Best Record Store in Dallas, I thought it was time to go straight to the expert—co-owner Chris Penn—to hear about the coolest (and weirdest) records in its inventory. I had dreamed of being shown an ancient, long-lost copy of The Beatles’ Carnival of Light, but what I found instead was a little less dusty and stained. Not that I should have been surprised: Good Records is, after all, a store that predominately sells new vinyl and CDs. Used music is bought and sold, but until Sir Paul walks into the store and hands over his copy of Carnival, I guess I’ll just have to wait. Until then, it’s 3-D and scratch-and-sniff vinyl, “nothing too too out of the ordinary.” Right, Chris.
Wow. We’ve seen an unprecedented number of votes in this year’s Best of Big D Readers’ Choice: Services Poll. Who knew the good people of Dallas were so passionate about where they get their pet grooming done?
Keep it going through May 29. Even when you’re out and about, you can make your figurative voice heard by visiting our website on your smartphone. Our mobile ballot is easy (and fun) to use.
While accessing a more traditional computer, vote here.
I told you, on Friday, what to expect.
Now’s your chance to live the dream.
VOTE.
Only you can determine who takes the title of “Best of Big D” and appears in the August 2011 issue of D Magazine.
Here we are: down to the final round of this year’s Best of Big D Readers’ Choice voting. And the questions we’re laying before the voters, starting Monday, are more important than ever before.
What’s the best day spa in Dallas? The best place to get your eyelashes done? Your eyebrows done? Best place for a facial? Best fitness program? Best massage? Best manicure and pedicure? Best waxing? Best yoga studio? Best sunless tanning salon? Hair salon?
Best auto mechanic? Tailor? Dry cleaner? Best place to board and groom your pets? Best shoe repair? Best car wash? Framer? Mover? Best stationer? Best yard care? Best veterinary clinic? Painter? Caterer?
Best kids’ party entertainer? Best family attraction? Best art classes for kids? Best family photographers?
Hold on, hold on. Don’t shout your answers at the computer screen. We can’t hear you yet. Just return on Monday and cast your ballot. You’ll be able to vote up to once an hour through May 29.
The winners will be announced in the August 2011 issue of D Magazine.
This is it, folks. Time to put up or shut up. We’ve come to the home stretch in our Best of Big D: Shopping poll, where were are deciding such important questions as: what’s the best furniture store in town? the best clothing store? the best comic book store? the best gift shop?
These are not trivial matters. Great songs will be written about the triumph of the winners. Honors shall be bestowed upon them, their children, and their children’s children. (But not their ne’er-do-well great-grandchildren.)
Most importantly (and truthfully), the winners will be recognized in the August 2011 issue of D Magazine. So vote now, and up to once an hour, through the last minutes of Sunday.
If you follow DMN baseball writer Evan Grant (Evan_P_Grant) on Twitter, you already know about his hashtag-gate. After the Rangers’ bullpen blew last night’’s game in Seattle, Grant innocently wrote:
Now Rangers’ going to 40-year-old interim closer in tie game with 0 outs in eighth and go-ahead runner on third. #bullpenisamess
He told me he didn’t do it on purpose. He didn’t realize the “brilliance” of the tweet until the tweet was posted. Needless to say, it’s rocketing through the Internet.
.
It’s time to get voting on all the best places to shop in and around Dallas.
The winners — your winners — will be recognized in the August 2011 issue of D Magazine.
It’s almost that time again, kids. Our Best of Big D Readers Choice polling continues on Monday with your chance to sound off on where to find the best shopping in town.
You’ll be able to vote up to once an hour through May 8, and cast your ballots on your smartphone through our mobile website.
It seems like just yesterday, doesn’t it, that I was telling you that you now had a chance to sound off up to once an hour on such important issues as where to find the best karaoke in town or who’s got the best beer selection?
Well, the voting on our Best of Big D Readers’ Choice: Nightlife poll ends Sunday night. So get to it while the getting is still good.
After our wildly successful Food and Drink voting last week, we’re proud to announce that on Monday our second round of this year’s Best of Big D Readers’ Choice poll will begin.
You’ll be able to vote up to once an hour, including on your smartphone, through April 3.
The ballots will determine such important questions as: who has the best beer selection in town, where’s the best place to eat after midnight, and who’s the best bartender? All the winners will be recognized in the August issue of D Magazine.
