RE: WEAR BLACK

An FBvian notes that the 80 percent Hispanic number that's being used re DISD doesn't square with the lower percentage on the DISD website, and she's right. DISD officials, what's the number?

Your reader quotes that DISD is 80% Hispanic -- maybe she meant Irving -- DISD is 62.5% Hispanic according to the web site.

The funny business I see as a DISD graduate and volunteer for over 30 years is that many of the "historically black" schools, such as Madison, Roosevelt and others are at 1/3 to 1/2 capacity, while nearby Hispanic schools are overcrowded and portables cover the playgrounds. A simple solution would be to re-draw attendance zones. But then that would make Madison, Roosevelt and others 1/2 or more Hispanic.

Also, DISD has as many or more Anglos than many smaller suburban districts or small city districts, but you never hear much about them. I guess it's because they are all concentrated in areas of East Dallas/Lakewood and parts of North Dallas -- but none of the Anglo population is in the majority except at maybe Stonewall Jackson and Lakewood Elementaries...

But then again RISD has only one remaining majority Anglo high school, Pearce -- but just barely -- you don't hear much about that, either.
