A MARCH TO REMEMBER

Dallas made history yesterday, as an estimated 500,000 people flocked to downtown to march against stricter immigration laws. Under a cloudless blue sky, with sunshine and 80º warmth, the streets were filled with Hispanics sporting white t-shirts and blue jeans. It was more celebration than protest, and it was a decidedly family affair: babies in strollers, grandmothers carrying flags, teenagers slurping popsicles. U.S. flags outnumbered Mexican flags 15 to 1, and signs like "Brown is Beautiful" captured a sense of pride that was refreshing and inspiring. It was a very American event, and hopefully it augers a new spirit of involved self-determination among Hispanics, especially in areas like education, where they now make up 66 percent of DISD students.
