JAMES FREY CANCELS DALLAS APPEARANCE

Not too big a surprise there. He was to have appeared at a Turtle Creek Manor luncheon Friday and talk about, em, that's where things could have become interesting. His book? Its lies? Oprah? Hence, the cancellation.

In his stead will be Drew Pinsky, otherwise known to the MTV generation as Dr. Drew.

Full release after the jump.

(January 30, 2006 – Dallas ) Turtle Creek Manor, a local non-profit agency, announced today that beleaguered author James Frey, A Million Little Pieces, has cancelled his scheduled appearance in Dallas on Friday. Mr. Frey had been scheduled to speak at the agency’s Vision of Hope awards luncheon on Friday, February 3.

However, in the wake of Mr. Frey’s much-publicized appearance on the Oprah Winfrey show last week, his representatives contacted Turtle Creek Manor to say that Mr. Frey would not appear in Dallas as scheduled.

John E. Castañeda, Executive Director, Turtle Creek Manor, said “We’re very disappointed that Mr. Frey was unable to keep his commitment to appear at Vision of Hope as scheduled. But we still are looking forward to the luncheon, which will honor Dr. Bryon Adinoff, Jan Mitura, and the late Edward K. Mims, three people who have made outstanding contributions to the Dallas community. Mr. Frey’s sad saga in no way diminishes the important work that we do with adults that have mental illness and chemical addiction disorders. Many of our clients are indigent, homeless, unemployed, and nearly 20 percent are HIV positive. We need the people of Dallas to come out and support our event so that we can continue to provide our clients with the critical treatment that they desperately need.”

In place of Mr. Frey, Drew Pinsky, M.D., board certified addictionologist, host of a nationally syndicated radio program and television personality, now is scheduled to appear and speak.

Tickets to the luncheon are $125.00 and can be purchased online at www.tcmanor.org or by calling 214.552.8256. Proceeds benefit Turtle Creek Manor a 501(c)(3), non-profit agency that has operated in Dallas since 1968.
