What To Do in Dallas This Weekend: May 21–23, 2010

caricatureThere’s so much to do this weekend. But I’m pretty fired up for tonight.

1. Vanilla Ice is playing at Trees. It’s free if you get there before 10 pm. FREE to see Vanilla Ice. I know, I can’t believe it either.

2. D Magazine is throwing a super-fun Reading Room event at Legacy Books. The best thing about Reading Room events? Getting to schmooze with D staffers. Trust me on this one.

3. The Dallas Museum of Art is open all night long tonight. Yep, it’s not closing. So you can go at 3 am (and if you do, tickets are half-price). I can’t stay up that late but hopefully one of you will and report back.

Jump for the rest of the weekend.

White Rock Local Market Launches Next Saturday

Those of us who live by the lake are pumped for the new White Rock Local Market. It’ll be held on the second Saturday of each month, and the first one is June 13. Meat, dairy, produce, even clothes — all of it made locally.

Initial List of AFI Films Ready For Your Perusal

The full list, which you may have already seen earlier, is after the jump. Below, the trailer for one of the films, Justin Wilson’s documentary, One Nation, which is a chronological look at the year 1968 and how it changed the country. If the name sounds familiar (no, not this guy), Wilson has been in several local bands (including Red Animal War and Saboteur). Also, he’s edited a number of videos by area bands — like this one, from Slowride, which happens to feature Dan Phillips from True Widow. And my posts for today have pretty much come full circle.

The Year in Music: Part 2

Up next is Holly Jefferson, who blogs over at Halz Haz a Say (and comments here on occasion). It’s after the jump — long-ish, but worth it, so maybe get a cup of coffee. More TK.

(And click here if you missed Part 1.)

Mount Vernon No Longer for Sale

Yesterday, the DMN reported that Mount Vernon, the old Hunt estate on White Rock, was for sale. And I wondered why the owners of the house, Teresa and John Amend, weren’t named in the story. But the PR guy for the real estate agent, Keith Nix, was quoted as saying the couple was “downsizing.” And, of course, the agent was Eleanor Mowery Sheets and her husband Nicky Sheets, who are currently feeling the heat from the feds for unpaid taxes. Right. That wasn’t mentioned in yesterday’s story either.

Now comes the follow-up. Turns out the house ain’t for sale. And John Amend sounds a little miffed about the whole thing. Over on DallasDirt, Candy is reporting that Nix told her the Sheets were given permission to list the house in a “hip pocket” fashion.

To me, it feels a lot like a publicity effort backfired here.

Leading Off (8/6/08)

1. The old Hunt mansion on White Rock Lake, Mount Vernon, is up for sale (for something like $50 million). I have three questions. First, why doesn’t this DMN story name the owners — especially since Keith Nix, a PR rep for the real estate broker, says they are downsizing? Well, the owners are Teresa and John Amend. Second question, this one for the Amends: the aforementioned real estate broker is Eleanor Mowery Sheets & Associates. Your home was apparently put on the market before the feds sued the Sheetses for not paying taxes. Any second thoughts? Third question: how come the DMN story doesn’t mention the lawsuit?

2. Homebuilder D.R. Horton lost $400 million in the latest quarter. The sound you hear is me snapping my chin strap, because I’m not sure my hands alone will allow me to hold on to my hat.

3. Speaking of bad financial news, you know what is no fun? When your locked-in electricity rate expires after a year, and your rate automatically resets without your knowing it. In the Rogers house, it led to a $513 bill last month, so I know how some of these people feel. Make sure the same thing doesn’t happen to you.

No More Pennies at Great American Hero

img_0033.JPGAs I just discovered, before enjoying a no. 6 on white, no tomatoes, the sandwichery at Lemmon and Throckmorton is taking a bold stance against the penny: They’re getting rid of it. As the sign says, prices are rounded up or down to the nearest nickel. The edict is obviously and blatantly a marketing ploy just for the sake of publicity. It’ll never work. I mean, what media person is so hard-up for local, relevant, timely news that he’d deign to even post such a thing on a blog?

WHITE ROCK WET?

During yesterday’s Casa Linda discussion, we all agreed that some sort of drinking establishment would be a good thing for the developers to think about. (By “all agreed,” I mean me and the four or five people who emailed me.) Some pointed out the area was dry. I suggested a grassroots campaign to reverse it. A knowledgeable FrontBurnervian says:

There is a petition drive ongoing in the precinct to make it all wet as opposed to partially wet. Paid volunteers are in all the supermarkets, esp Albertsons and Krogers, getting shoppers to sign. You have to live in the precinct to sign the petition.

Well how about that. I’m a genius.

RE: THE OTHER SIDE OF JIM SCHUTZE

Why not? Given events at Belo, now’s a good time to re-read Jim’s story on the death of the Times Herald:
