The Monday weeklies have been saving us for months now, but thankfully you have more options tonight. The singer/songwriter Marissa Nadler will be appearing at City Tavern this evening, and it’s difficult to assign the artist with such a limiting job description. Nadler is singular among her contemporaries for the simple fact that she tends to imbue a gravity to her material that is anything but light or simplistic. The music remains highly accessible but the overall approach is as stone-faced as any metal act. Nadler also has a knack for intelligent collaborative choices; she has recorded duets with the celebrated singer, Angel Olsen, and her newest album was released on Sacred Bones, the label that also handles the recorded works of both David Lynch and Jim Jarmusch. Nadler will be joined by some of the better local artists who also work in her chosen genreā€”solo vocalist and guitarists, Dim Locator (aka Will Kapinos), and Delmore Pilcrow (aka Chris Garver).

Asian Film Festival Dallas is now in its fourth day, and I’ve been hearing nothing but praise so far for its completely adventurous programming. The event continues through Thursday at the Angelika’s Mockingbird Station location.
