Fortune magazine published its 17th annual ‘100 Best Companies to Work For’ list on Thursday and, though Google snagged the top spot, 12 companies based in Texas also peppered the rankings. At 28th and 82nd are two North Texas-based companies, The Container Store and TDIndustries, respectively.
The Container Store, the storage and organization chain that houses its headquarters in a colorful corporate campus and 1 million-square-foot distribution center in Coppell, has made Fortune‘s list for the last 15 years and earned the No. 1 spot twice—once in 2000 and again in 2001. 2013 was a huge year for The Container Store, which completed its initial public offering in November and, as a result, put 20 percent of its ownership into the hands of its employees. In conjunction with the Fortune list, the culture-conscious brand also announced Thursday its launch of a new, purpose-driven marketing campaign featuring full-page newspaper ads running nationwide and YouTube videos touting CEO Kip Tindell’s initiative toward ‘Conscious Capitalism.’
TDIndustries, which is based in North Dallas along the Interstate 35 corridor, has appeared on the list every year since its inception in 1998 and didn’t fall from the Top 10 until 2005. For more than 65 years, TDIndustries has specialized in mechanical construction for a variety of clients, including big North Texas names such as Baylor Medical Center, Forest Park Medical Center, Dallas Cowboys Stadium, Rangers Ballpark, The Crescent Hotel, and the Trinity River Audubon Center.
Other Texas-based companies named by Fortune include Austin-based Whole Foods Market (44th) and National Instruments (66th); Houston-based Camden Property Trust (11th), David Weekley Homes (13th), Hilcorp (15th), Houston Methodist (46th), and EOG Resources (97th); and San Antonio-based USAA (17th), NuStar Energy (26th), and Rackspace Hosting (29th).
