Spirit Airlines Flight from DFW Explodes, Lands Safely

A Tuesday flight from Atlanta to DFW Airport from DFW, headed to Atlanta, had an “emergency situation” that this reporter describes as an engine exploding. The flight returned to the airport and landed safely, but before that passengers were texting loved ones (and filming without turning their phones sideways).

Part of one message read, “…I love you make sure my kids know that forever. We have a problem I [sic] the plane it’s full of smoke [sic] the engine has stop and te [sic] whole plane is shaking … I love you don’t forget it!! Pray for me.”

This flight was apparently from Dallas to Atlanta, not the other way around as you report.

  • Brian Youngblood

It bears repeating, “if you stumble on something newsworthy, I know you probably will be nervous and rushed and fumbling and so on, but shoot your video in LANDSCAPE. It’s so easy. Turn your phone 90 degrees. Right or left — it really doesn’t matter.”

Maybe get a shot of outside the plane too!

  • Zac Crain

    Thank you, Brian.

  • Michael J. Mooney

    Good catch. Change made.

  • Hansel

While you’re at it, change your headline, too. If the plan exploded, everyone would have died. The engine exploded, right?

  • Michael J. Mooney

I rather enjoy the headline actually.

People are not supposed to be using two way transmissions like cell phones in flight. It could of made things harder for pilots if it messed with any navigation equipment. I think the FAA should also investigate the man who sent a text.
