Things To Do In Dallas Tonight: Feb. 5

Wynton Marsalis.

Wynton Marsalis is here. I resisted the urge to all caps that, but I am serious. Your plans are easy like Sunday morning, except it’s a Tuesday night. Time to party at the ultimate crazy concert venue.

I kid, the show’s at the Winspear Opera House. But knock over an empty (empty, people) plastic flute of Champagne just to hear it bounce. Go nuts. Marsalis, who I’ve seen live only once before at an outdoor jazz festival in Paris (I know), leads the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, 15 fantastic soloists and multi-instrumentalists who can swing, bebop, and more. The set features a mix of original compositions and masterworks by Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, and John Coltrane. Names you must know. Just for fun, here’s Coltrane’s “Syeeda’s Song Flute.” For dinner, I can recommend both the salad with chicken and the smashed meatball pita at The Greek. They were both really, really good.

If it’s a more casual but still musical atmosphere you want, Sandaga 813 in Fair Park hosts Shelley Carrol, also a regular of Monday night jazz at the Amsterdam, with Bernard Wright. That’s only five bucks at the door.

Elsewhere, Tuesday Night Trash floats in from the ether at the Texas Theatre, with a few notable changes. For one thing, it’s no longer free (but still cheaper than your average evening out). For another, you can only get this garbage on the first Tuesday of every month. They’re actually screening Street Trash tonight, so I’ll leave you with this IMDB summary. “When a liquor store owner finds a case of ‘Viper’ in his cellar, he decides to sell it to the local hobos at one dollar a bottle, unaware of its true properties.” Perfect. Obviously, the bar will have a Viper drink special, which you’ll probably need a few of to sit through this.
