Gordon Keith Interviews Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell

This is some pretty solid work. I’ve got a new appreciation for Dax Shepard, especially.

Make Some Shade at Dallas City Hall

Two folks who work at City Hall, Patrick McDonnell and Amanda Popken, are trying to create shade in the plaza in front of the building made famous by Robocop. They’ve got a Kickstarter going. With 12 days remaining, they’ve only raised $320 of their $5,000 goal. Give it a look.

A.H. Belo To Cut Staff at Providence Journal

No firm numbers, but the downsizing will follow a familiar pattern. First come the buyouts, then come the layoffs. In March, you will recall, Belo CEO and chairman Robert Decherd got a 25 percent raise, to $600,000, and Belo EVP and DMN publisher Jim Moroney got a 15.5 percent raise, to $540,000. Bad timing.

Shy Anderson and Jerry Jones Make SportsCenter’s Not Top 10, But the Clip Mysteriously Disappears

So I just happened to catch the SportsCenter Not Top 10, the segment each Friday morning in which they highlight the most amusing of the worst plays of the week.  I noted that Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones having his glasses cleaned by his son-in-law Shy Anderson during Wednesday night’s season opener agains the New York Giants (video above) made the list.

But then I looked for the video of the segment on the SportsCenter website, and in this online version, Jones and Anderson are nowhere to be seen. Instead the video skips straight from No. 7 to No. 5.

I welcome your conspiracy theories, even if the explanation is something more mundane like the NFL’s regulations about allowing its video to be streamed online.

Time to lay down some more rules for Jerry?

Things To Do In Dallas This Weekend: Sept. 7-9

Untapped_Dallas

This is on Saturday. Patience.

If you had a difficult week, and maybe if you’re about to begin an equally difficult and busy weekend, take a second to watch this video of former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords leading the Pledge of Allegiance at the Democratic National Convention. Now proceed.

Friday

I don’t think there’s been a more romantic song penned in the last 25 years than Lyle Lovett’s “I Know You Know.” So  what it’s more jazz club than country, and so what nobody ever seems to put it in their top five. I love it. It’s my favorite Lovett song. I think you might like it, too. Spotify time. After that, try his crazy good cover of “Stand By Your Man.” Goodbye, stress.

Now, I can’t tell you what Lovett will perform this evening with the members of his large band. The above is just my wish list. I’m sure you have your own. But the concert is a benefit for CitySquare, which means that while the tickets will be pricey, the money supports a good cause. CitySquare offers a multitude of vital social services to the homeless, the needy, and the uninsured. You can still get tickets for the balcony at the Majestic downtown.

Also tonight, Uptown Players gives playwright Stephen Karam’s Speech & Debate its regional premiere as part of their Dallas Pride Performing Arts Festival. As I said in my weekend theater guide over on FrontRow, I think this is a writer folks might want to keep an eye on, and this strange comedy about misfit teenage drama students is worth your time. There’s a time-travelling witch from The Crucible and Abraham Lincoln is gay. What more do you want? But get tickets, because this show only runs for three nights.

Leading Off (9/7/12)

Bomb Hoax Victim Arrested Again. Christopher N. Shell can officially call yesterday a no-good, terrible day.  First his plane from Philly to Dallas is forced to turn around. Once back in Philly, he’s plucked from the plane and accused of having an explosive. Then when he’s cleared of that and allowed to fly to Dallas, he gets here and is arrested on outstanding warrants.  That’s not generally how Thursdays are supposed to go. Also, be careful how you leave it with your ex. Seriously.

Flaming Car Crashes into Building. Someone stole this Nissan Versa, and then drove it like he stole it, right up to the part where the engine caught fire and he drove it into a building, which also caught fire, and then ran away. This would’ve never happened if he had stolen American, amirite?

No Friday Night Lights for Grapevine-Colleyville. The booster club is all het up about the fact that they can’t sell sausage on a stick because there are no home games right now for GCISD after it was discovered (one tipped over) that their lights were not safe. They’re facing the loss of $18,000 total since the lights probably won’t be up til later this month.

McKinney ISD Has a Cool Smartphone App. McKinney ISD’s parents apparently love the misdGO app. Dallas ISD doesn’t have an app, as far as I can tell. Do we have an app? Why not?

Trader Joe’s in Plano Opens Today. If you have the patience of Job, and don’t mind people, you are probably not me. Therefore, it is safe for you to go to Trader Joe’s on its opening day. Have fun with that, but hear this: All that Cookie Butter and Two-Buck Chuck you’re buying today will be there two weeks from now, when I waltz in and don’t have to wait or search for a parking space. Just like In and Out still had burgers when I went a month later.
