The Lakewood Theater Facebook page has this picture showing the damage from the recent hail storm. Photo by Scott Valencia
The unpleasantness of the hail storm of a couple weeks ago caused major damage to the Lakewood Theater in Dallas. As you can see, the marquee was destroyed, but what’s even worse is that the tower has had to remain dark, as it’s in need of repairs.
The theater has set up a fund through Chase Bank, taking donations to aid their effort. Anyway, I’m making this plug for somewhat personal reasons.
My wedding reception was at the theater. Our names were up on that marquee on that special night, so it hurts a little to see it damaged.

Why not use Kickstarter as well? Or IndieGoGo?
Isn’t this what insurance is for? Or are the donations supposed to cover the deductible?
Or insurance proceeds?
Is the Lakewood Theater a charity or a for-profit business? Either way they should have insurance to cover this damage. If they are a charity, maybe I would donate to help mitigate the deductible amount. If they are a for-profit business and they are asking for help with their deductible, I will donate if they will help out with my deductible also. If they are a for-profit business and just didn’t have insurance; shame on them for both not having it, and shame on them for trying to foist their stupidity on the public.
What a wonderful positive PR opportunity for D Magazine!

Exactly – and I emailed the owner about this and he replied that they basically have a $20k deductible – which I guess I can see – but it’s a for profit business, but the way it’s run, it’s probably not making much profit.
Look at their calendar on the website – http://www.lakewoodtheater.com/
They have 1 event on there for July…….1……. But wait, look at August……drum roll……..ZERO – no wonder they need money to rebuild the tower/pay the deductible – they have 2 Rocky Horror Shows and 1 Burlesque show a month – same people go to those each month…..how about some cool films/movie showings a la Alamo DraftHouse, or a national comedy act, they were going to have Tracy Morgan there a couple years ago, but it was canceled, but it’s been years since they had anything like that – it’s poorly run, so I’m not surprised – would be nice to even have it like Inwood Theater….calling Mr. Cuban?
It is a great opportunity for Micocina to gain favor with the neighborhood after replacing Matt’s a longtime favorite TexMex outpost.
If it were just an average business, that might be another story, but the Lakewood Theater is both an institution and a landmark. The neighborhood ‘skyline’ greatly misses the beckoning glow of the lit tower. I’m in. Thanks Jason.
Um, no one donated when I had a wreck and had to pay the deductible. Sorry, but not sorry.
In regards to scheduled events, I think they have several regular events each month open to the public, but are usually used for private events. Case in point, the wedding of the author of this post. As for national acts, Paula Poundstone was at the theater last month, as was the Dallas Contemporary Ballet, and the “Move to Groove” Ball. Chef DC has a monthly event here, as does Viva Dallas Burlesque and the Amber Does Dallas shadowcast. But in regards to supporting a private business in covering their deductible, that is another matter. When a private enterprise maintains a neighborhood landmark, the neighborhood should just enjoy the landmark as long as the business lets it.
If it is so important to Lakewood, why do they not have events? (per Lakewoody)
Thats fine that it’s an institution – but let someone run it that will have better stuff there – lakewoodier, private events are on thing, but I live across the street and most nights it’s empty – I’m nit even going to address Paula poundstone…. I guess that counts. I’d prefer having Granada type concerts/shows to the rocky horror picture show twice a month.
No question that they could bring more and better shows. The Granada seems much better managed. But would you rather have it lit up or dark? No one’s going to help me with my roof deductible either, but it means something to me to help to see the LAKEWOOD glow again. It may not to you, and that’s okay.
