The Road Less Traveled

An alert FrontBurnervian sends along this image of a DPD cop traversing the switchbacks at the Wyly. Maybe not the most efficient route?

On the Nature of our Always-Connected Digital Lives. (Or: Is It Strange That It Took Me a Couple of Hours to Hear the Wilonsky News?)

Something’s been rattling around in my head since yesterday. I’m in a sharing mood. Plus, you’ll have an opportunity here to make fun of me. So:

Monday night, at 9:57, I was at home doing domestic things, watching TV, drinking wine, etc. My father, who lives out of the country, was in town. We’d spent the day with my 6-year-old daughter playing miniature golf and goofing off. My wife, staring at at text message that night, said, “[Name redacted] says Robert Wilonsky has left the Observer for a job at the Morning News.” I know it was 9:57, because that’s when my phone tells me I sent a text to Robert: “Rumor: you are going to DMN. Insane. But have to ask. True or no?”

Robert responded with a cryptic text about the Replacements and a reference to the “8-year-old that lives in his house.” I made the wanking motion and forgot about it …

Excellence in Nursing Awards 2012

In our March issue, which is on newsstands tomorrow, you’ll see a section called Excellence in Nursing Awards. We asked hospitals, patients, and nurses to fill out a really lengthy nomination form for nurses they thought deserved some recognition. We got 349 nominations. From those nominations, we had a panel narrow the list down to 86 finalists and 21 winners. Last night, we had a dinner at the Westin Galleria to recognize all the wonderful work nurses do and to announce the winners.

Things To Do in Dallas Tonight: Feb. 22

I once spent a week and a half trapped on a tiny sailboat in the Florida Keys with a bunch of Girl Scouts and a grizzled, tyrannical captain who believed in only two kinds of music: Jimmy Buffett, and more Jimmy Buffett. I tried to sneak in some Savage Garden (side note: I was 12), but my CD got thrown overboard. Needless to say, I’m traumatized. The opening strains of “Cheeseburger In Paradise” and “Margaritavilla” inspire genuine terror (as do extremely literal YouTube videos and the actual Margaritaville establishments).

Anyway, now that I’ve gone down that wormhole, I might as well inform you that it’s National Margarita Day. Go try the best in Dallas, over at Komali. Tamarind purée, Cointreau, lime, Casa Noble reposado. You’re welcome.

For a slightly more restrained way to spend your evening (because tequila has done nothing for anyone’s dignity, ever), you have a couple of options. First, Raya has made my job so easy by seeking out and posting all the details on an awesome-sounding pop up clothing shop. On ShopTalk yesterday, she told you all about Clothes Encounters, a three-times-a-year trunk show-style event that starts this evening and lasts through Friday. Browse full collections from hard-to-find brands (chosen by Joanne Levvy and Melanie Fogel), and then order what you like in the colors of your choice.

If We Don’t Get Large Marge Into TNT’s Dallas Credits, We May Have Wasted $182 Million

The Dallas Morning News added up the full cost for the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge and found that it’s greater than $182 million. That number is higher than earlier estimates of about $117 million.  The city’s share seems to have been about $28 million, which is “in the ballpark of earlier estimates,” according to the (paywalled) story today.

Large Marge is about to have her grand opening on March 2. (And West Dallas is hosting its own happenings the same weekend — called Bridge-o-Rama — not part of the official Trinity Trust events.)

A little while back I had breakfast with Lynn McBee, the super-fundraiser and volunteer who was heavily involved in planning the bridge’s opening celebration. She’s most excited about Saturday, March 3, when the Trinity Trust expects 30,000 people to come to the bridge for a street fair.

What does she believe we’re getting for our $182 million?

Leading Off (2/22/12)

Youngest Child at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas Gets Berlin Heart. Daniela, a 12-week-old baby, got an artificial heart last week. It was a 10-hour surgery. In the end, it was a success and has bought the little girl some extra time as she waits for a heart transplant.

Inheritance of Comic Books Will Fetch $2 Million. Dallas-based auction house, Heritage Auctions, is overseeing the sale of 345 rare comic books today. The books were discovered in a tucked away box. Now a couple of nephews who indicated a slight interest in comic books years ago are about to get a nice, little payday.

Family Kicked Out of House. The woman who was kicked out of a $386,000 house in Flower Mound said she wasn’t sure if she had paid for the house that she, her husband, and three kids had been living in for six months. Her husband “does the paperwork.” Regardless, she was very angry about being kicked out. She’s not a squatter, she claims, she mows the lawn and pays the water bill.
