Ralph Nader Versus American Airlines

Legendary consumer advocate and sometimes Presidential candidate Ralph Nader is pretty upset at American Airlines right now. It seems that Nader had a middle seat booked on a flight from Hartford to DFW, and being 6-foot-4, he wanted an aisle seat. The airline did have some aisle seats available, they told him, but only for “preferred” customers. Nader could have joined that club, but it would have cost him $2,000. So he’s taking to the airwaves, calling the airline’s practice “extortion.” An American spokesman says the policy is simply to reward the most “loyal” customers. This is also not the first time Nader has taken on an airline either, and last time he won.

  1. He needs to quit being spoiled. He could’ve paid the $29 fee to change seats. Being a platinum level flyer only makes me feel better about the perks that I have and that he doesn’t have.

  2. Frankly, the new(ish) seat allocation system is about the only thing AA has done right in the last 10 years. I usually spend $1000+ on each airline ticket because most are purchased within 21 days of departure. Nothing irks me more than getting a middle seat in the back of the plane after paying a grand because someone else booked 3 months before departure and paid $200 but has a front of the plane aisle seat.

  3. I would think Nader would have the miles, given all of the left-wing speaking engagements he does everywhere. Methinks he is just a whiny attention whore.
