Two Killed and Officer Hurt at DART Shooting. It’s the third deadly incident at DART since November. This time, two people died. But public transportation user Cathy Bentz isn’t worried. “Something like that could happen anywhere,” she said. “On a car, in a plane, even just going for a walk,” she said to the Morning News (behind paywall).
Rowlett Asks Gun Range To Be Safer. I don’t think it’s too much to ask: if you’re a gun range, make sure stray bullets don’t travel into a family’s home. Yesterday, the owner of the gun range agreed to try to make his business safer. The city of Rowlett filed an injunction after the third stray-bullet incident.
DISD Will Probably Have More Layoffs. But you’re not surprised, are you?

An odd comment by the DART spokesman:
“I don’t really know what can be done; you have a right to carry in the state of Texas,” spokesman Mark Ball told KTVT-TV (Channel 11). “If there is anything in the future that we can possibly do, we’ll do it.”
1) There is no right to carry. However, residents may *apply* for a *permit* for *concealed* carry after meeting several requirements.
2) If there were a right to carry – which there isn’t – what does that have to do with this incident?
3) Perhaps the spokesman is referring to the DART officer’s right to carry?
4) Or is the spokesman blaming the incident on this right to carry – which doesn’t exist?
5) By extension, is the spokesman saying guns are to blame rather than the murderer?
6) Can it be that the spokesman is ignorant of the fact that violent crimes have plummeted as concealed carry permits have grown?
7) Maybe the spokesman is saying that the innocent victims in this shooting should have exercised their “right to carry” and defended themselves?
Odd indeed.
1. What Eric said.
2. The berms should be higher, I will grant that. Too many novice shooters do not exercise proper muzzle control / discipline. I will have to say that the City of Rowlett allowed development in a formerly rural area that is DOWNRANGE of an outdoor shooting sports establishment. Foresight would have gone a long way. Now I have to go to the unregulated private shooting ranges (or Fort Worth) to maintain proficiency with my .308. BTW, an unregulated private shooting range is any private property on unincorporated land in Texas, aka ‘the back 40′ or Bubba’s back yard.
3. DISD – Disgracefully Incompetent School District. I’m not blaming the teachers, I blame the bloated and self-serving administration. Divide the district for the sake of the children and our property values!
