Leading Off (2/1/12)

Susan G. Komen for the Cure Cuts Ties with Planned Parenthood. Dallas-based Komen has told its affiliates that it will no longer give grants to the Planned Parenthood. The reason, as stated by Komen, is that Planned Parenthood is under investigation. But Komen is being accused of falling to pressure from anti-abortion groups. Now, Planned Parenthood is trying to recoup the loss. As stated in the Morning News/AP article, “Already, the family foundation of Dallas oilman/philanthropist Lee Fikes and his wife, Amy, has donated $250,000 for this purpose, Planned Parenthood said.”

Teacher Reinstated After Four Days of Paid Leave. You remember the story about Joseph Drake, the fourth grade teacher who sent an angry email to DISD Board Trustee Edwin Flores after the board decided to extend teachers’ days by 45 minutes. Well. Four days later, he’s been reinstated. I’m sure Flores’ comments about the entire situation will come up a few times before the May elections.

Brave Boys Turn in Burglars, Return Money.
Two Fort Worth boys were playing outside when their neighbors’ house was broken into. One of the burglars gave the boys $100 each to not say anything. “So that’s why I knew right away we were going to have to tell police anyways,” said one of the boys, LaDarias. And that’s what he and LaDarian did. A week after the incident, one of the suspects punched LaDarias in the nose. But he’s not fazed. I like the cut of this kid’s jib.

  1. At first, I was confused. Why would a breast cancer prevention organization even give money to Planned Parenthood? However, Planned Parenthood uses the funds to offer breast-cancer screening for women who couldn’t normally afford such services.

  2. Screw Komen and their 3 day walks etc. Hopefully, sane people will cut back on their donations to this cause, and send it to help the underpriviledged women who need the services of Planned Parenthood. Nancy Brinker should be ashamed.

  3. This came on the day my doctor recommended annual mammograms, which I am lucky enough to have covered by insurance. Not because I have some additional risk, but because I am over 40. How are poor women supposed to afford that kind of care without help from PP? SGK just made a huge mistake that will take a long time to recover from.

  4. What the right-wing nutjobs don’t realize (or take the time to research) is that Planned Parenthood isn’t an abortion factory, in fact, most of the services it provides assist lower income women with preventative health care and different forms of birth control.

  5. Brett, examine PP stats more carefully. The way PP counts “services” distorts the ugly picture of babies being killed. People do lie with statistics. Yes, I am pro-life.

  6. peelins, the way people with an agenda examine “statistics” also distorts the picture of how low income women benefit from receiving services those with insurance or those that are better off take for granted.

  7. I really do hope that the big money mover and shakers who donate money and products–especially for Breast Awareness month–will withdraw any future support to Komen. This is an asinine mistake on a colossal scale.

  8. It is unfathomable to me how a side with all these women who feel so strongly about children and mothers and the gift of life, would push so hard at companies that HELP women. To me, a woman who felt that strongly about saving the unborn would spend a lot more money giving to programs that actually HELP the unborn: places for pregnant women to go, WIC support to feed them, food stamps to help the women feed these children, health centers that offer affordable and free health care, housing to put roofs over their heads. Instead of pushing Komen to put a limitation on their money (this money is ONLY for breast screenings), like most donors I know do (this money is to be used for scholarships for women, this money is NOT to pay for political ads) they want to cut ALL funding. That doesn’t seem very pro-life to me.

  9. Nancy Brinker is very connected to the Republican party and I’m laying the blame for this stupid decision squarely at her Louboutin-clad feet. As a pro-choice Christian with HUMAN values, I’m appalled at this decision by Komen and will no longer support any of its fundraising efforts.

  10. The board and senior staff at Komen have been infiltrated by right-wingers. Nancy Brinker owes everyone an apology and should immediately correct this dreadful mistake.

  11. John Mitchell once said of the Watergate coverage by the Washington Post: “Katherine Graham is gonna get her tit caught in a wringer.” Methinks Nancy Brinker is becoming familiar with that sensation.

  12. @amanda Congressional committee, House Committee on Oversight and Investigations is looking into them for violations: financial disparities, compliance with federal regulations on taxpayer funding and concerns that it is covering up cases of sex trafficking. They want to know how the federal dollars are being used, basically. Conservatives do not believe the numbers that PP releases about how many abortions they actually do, they say that the number is distorted and under reported.

  13. Also, on the pro-life blogs, they like to point out that Planned Parenthood doesn’t have a mammography machine on-site. Well, that is true. Except that they send you to a partnered clinic that DOES have the machine and trained staff, and PAY FOR it. So, they are, by virtue of paying for your mammogram, actually making sure you get the mammogram, for free. Like, the grant from SGKF said.

Plus, if anyone should look into financial practices of non-profits, it should be into SGKF. My friend who was diagnosed with breast cancer at 25, says that the organization has spurred some survivors, who look into it more, to stop funding THEIR programs. That’s where the Think Before You Pink campaign came from, and many others. There are plenty of other breast cancer organizations out there that do amazing work. Give your money to them.

  14. As a family with a two time Breast cancer survivor, we have a closet full of Koman Walk for the Cure T-shirts have supported them for years, not any more.

    Here’s what I did:

    -Called Komen’s HQ at (877) 395-6636
-Requested that my address be removed from Koman’s mailing list.
-Left a comment after getting transferred three times.

An organization that places political expediency before Women’s health is unworthy of my financial support.

Assisting fringe extremists to restrict a woman’s access to legal medically approved healthcare and health information is morally bankrupt.

  15. Can’t believe that no one has noted yet that Nancy Brinker is (or at least was as of 2010) a member of Planned Parenthood of North Texas’ advisory board. Don’t know how she’s living with herself today. Completely spineless.

Komen is the bully on the charity block, and I’m glad they’re on the defensive for a change. Their behavior towards other charities is disgusting. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/12/07/komen-foundation-charities-cure_n_793176.html

I’m equally glad to see that donors are stepping up for Planned Parenthood. If you support healthcare for all women, they deserve your support.

  16. I really like my Nike black-and-pink cap, part of the “Dedicated to” campaign. Don’t like it as much anymore, I admit.

  17. Dallas-based Lori Stahl at POST POLITICS reports that Ms. Brinker is also heavily involved with the Bush Library. Maybe she’s trying to glom the library onto a once-respected organization. Maybe she’ll figure out that she’s failed.

  18. @Grumpy Demo followed your lead and removed my name from the list. Also, emailed the Fundraising Director of Dallas about why she won’t get another penny from me. Moving my donations to a better deserving organization. Also, posted on my FB and encouraged my friends to do the same. The overhead costs and the way they go after other charities has never sat well with me. My grandmother was a two-time survivor and a good friend was diagnosed at 25, just a few years ago. I’ll still support the boobies and save the tatas, just not SGKF.

  19. Nancy Brinker is a political machine and always has been. She cajoled the $$ and contacts from Norman Brinker to start it up and had crooked folks in convenient places (M Valentine) to help her out along the way. There’s not doubt that SGKF has done some great things for the cause, but it’s done really great things for Nancy Brinker. Please, SGKF, take the money you had allocated for PP and give it to another women’s care organization that reaches women in need. Do the right thing.

  20. Not trying to stir the pot…

However, if statistics hold true, and the scuttlebutt is legit…this may be purely a business decision on Brinker’s part. Conservatives have not, specifically supported SGK b/c of the PP link. By withdrawing the funding, she stands to gain a windfall in new donations. For all the finger wagging on this blog and others, conservatives do donate more to the causes they support. My opinion is that this was a business decision.

For those that feel passionate about it, just re-direct your dollars to PP.

  21. The founder of Planned Parenthood was not fond of black people in general and a bit of an elitist. What if the following statement is correct: “The National Cancer Institute has stated that mammography is especially dangerous for younger women. In fact, they have stated that it could cause 75 cases of breast cancer for every 15 it identifies. Other studies have shown up to a 52% increase in breast cancer mortality in young women given annual testing.” Or what if they finally prove that there is a higher risk of breast cancer or any other cancer with women who have had an abortion.

Would the Komen foundation then through the funding of PP be guilty of actually causing more poor women to develop breast cancer to perpetuate the need for their organization?

  22. Screw the conservatives, nancy stinker, pro-lifers, the whole lot of them. Everyone who has ever worked or volunteered at a PP knows full well that it’s Peelins’ and Dubious Brother’s daughters and Santorum’s wife who show up like clockwork to receive their abortions. It’s ok for them–they just don’t want YOU to have anything.

The best revenge is that PP flourishes with new donors and donations. Do it now:
