Meet Michelle Rawlings, Mayor Mike’s Daughter, and Her NSFW Artwork

"I Love You All" by Michelle Rawlings

"I Love You All" by Michelle Rawlings

FrontRow notes that artist Michelle Rawlings, the daughter of Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings, will have an exhibition of her work at the Oliver Francis Gallery starting Jan. 21.

Even if you don’t give a whit about art, please click here and scroll down to behold “Pin the Macho on the Man,” a (NSFW) piece of which her papa must be especially proud.

Meanwhile, I’m going to try to make it compute that the printing of a photo on an inkjet is considered art.

UPDATE: Stop the presses! Is that Mayor Mike himself on the fake Playgirl cover with the uncle?

UPDATE UPDATE: Yes, it is.

Law Man Walking: Nature Treks With Bill Holston

As Zac mentioned earlier, our friend Bill Holston has himself a new gig. Owing to that change, this will be his last “Law Man Walking” for a while or possibly ever (though you might keep your eyes on the magazine in the coming months). In this installment, he explains why Bart Simpson Lake is called Bart Simpson Lake, and he reflects on leaving behind 30 years of practicing law.

KDFW Sports Department Lineup, Ctd.

UPDATE: Drew Soicher fessed up and tweeted about the KDFW sports department:

  • “I joked last week that I’ve been offered job in Dallas bc my style fits with the fun news team.”
  • “I guess now is a good time to apologize to Fox4 Sports Director Mike Doocy. Plus all of you in CO who were hoping the whole thing was true.”

  • Rick Perry’s Faux Outrage Over Private Equity

Gov. Rick Perry’s on a slippery slope ripping Mitt Romney as a “vulture capitalist” at Bain. He’s doing it, of course, because it’s about the last arrow in the guv’s quiver. But Perry has corraled a lot of dough from private-equity-type firms himself. Blasting the way p/e firms work is short-sighted and stupid, and plays right into the Occupy Wall Street (read: White House) narrative.

There are always pluses and minuses with private equity but overall it’s a positive, and Perry of all people has to know it. For an example consider what’s happened at ClubCorp, the Dallas company that was taken over by KSL Capital, a Denver-based private-equity firm, in early 2007.

Irving-based Hostess Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

For the second time in two years, the company that brings the world Twinkies and Wonder Bread has filed for bankruptcy protection. In court documents, Hostess says its pricing isn’t competitive “primarily due to legacy pension and medical benefit obligations and restrictive work rules.” The company says union workers comprise about 83 percent of its workforce. I’m sure plenty of people will suggest that Hostess is now getting its just deserts.

Things To Do In Dallas Tonight: Jan. 11

The Kalita Humphreys Theater, one of the few theaters Frank Lloyd Wright designed, is really lovely. It’s probably my favorite building in Dallas, and a wonderful place to see a show. But of course Wright also designed homes, including one or two here in town and an especially interesting one in Chicago’s Oak Park suburb.

Heurtley House, a 1902 design considered an early example of Wright’s full prairie style, was painstakingly restored over the course of five years, and those efforts were captured on film. The Dallas Center for Architecture kicks off their 2012 film series by screening the fairly short documentary tonight, with complimentary refreshments provided. It’s narrated by architectural historian H. Allen Brook, and covers everything from construction to the challenge of updating a piece of history for modern day living. Hungry (or thirsty) after? City Tavern has some sort of crazy stuffed jalapeño my friend has been dying to try. Moira, of Girl Walks Into a Bar fame, recommends parking in a garage on Elm in last September’s issue of D.

Should you find yourself in Cowtown, you can still snag tickets to the Suzy Bogguss concert in the Bass Hall’s McDavid Studio. It’s up for debate, but I think I prefer Bogguss’ “Cross My Broken Heart” to the song with the same title that appeared on the soundtrack to Beverly Hills Cop II.

Dallas Police Pass ‘Mankind’s True Moral Test,’ But Did They Get Carried Away Over Trapped Dogs?

The Czech novelist Milan Kundera, in his masterpiece The Unbearable Lightness of Being, writes:

True human goodness, in all its purity and freedom, can come to the fore only when its recipient has no power. Mankind’s true moral test, its fundamental test (which lies deeply buried from view), consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals.

Me, I find ridiculous what the Dallas Police did to retrieve two dogs from inside a locked car (paywalled story):

Danika Shipman said she checked the outside temperature on her phone. Because the day was mild, she and her husband felt comfortable leaving Copper, 2, and Penny, 6 months, in the car with the windows cracked. The pets had just been fed, she said.

They had heard that some dogs have been stolen from cars after the animals accidentally hit the electronic door lock. So they propped the back folding seats down slightly so Copper and Penny would be confined to the back of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata.

The dogs could still pop their heads out from behind the seats, Danika Shipman said.

Dallas police officer called John Shipman and told him to come outside, his wife said.

When he went to the parking lot, “it looked like a murder scene,” he said. Four police cars, a Dallas Fire-Rescue vehicle and an animal services truck were clustered around their car.

Someone had heard the dogs barking, Hill said, and, “after not seeing anything in the car, they decided that it must be coming from the trunk.”

Bill Holston Named Executive Director At Human Rights Initiative of North Texas

Our good pal and Law Man Walking contributor Bill Holston announced yesterday that he was taking the top gig at the Human Rights Initiative of North Texas, after providing pro bono legal counsel for HRI since 1987. Great  match of an organization and a man, and I hope you’ll join me in congratulating Bill.

KDFW Sports Department May Be Changing Lineup

Mike James at NewsBlues (subs.req.) is reporting that changes are afoot in the KDFW sports department:

“Drew Soicher, sports director at Gannett’s KUSA-9-NBC in Denver (Market #17) for the past 12 years, has been offered the top sports job at Fox-owned KDFW-4 in Dallas (Market #5).

“It’s unclear whether Soicher has accepted the job. And it’s equally unclear what this means for current KDFW Sports Director Mike Doocy. Stay tuned, and remember you saw it here first.”

Rick Perry Rolls on to South Carolina

Water will always find its own level. His 1,709 votes in New Hampshire last night may not have outperformed what AP calls “other” (3,240 votes), but at least he now knows that there are 1,709 people in one state who want to re-invade Iraq.

Zac was dearly hoping he would come in over 1 percent, but he didn’t quite make it. No worries. His consultants will talk him into staying in the race. After all, he’s still got $3 million in the bank that they haven’t paid themselves yet. And he did beat Buddy Roemer.

    Leading Off (1/11/12)

Mark Cuban and Dog Replace Kim Kardashian in Skechers Super Bowl Ad. Last year, you saw half-clothed Kim Kardashian telling a very sexy man that things weren’t working out, though he was “the best” she’d ever had. Then she tells her trainer she found something better—her new Skechers shoes. This year, I’m assuming the brand will go along the same lines, because sex sells. So which one will play the trainer—Cuban or the dog? Tune in during the Super Bowl to find out.

Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge Lights Up. It’s been a long time in the making, but finally, last night around 6:20, the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge was all lit up. Speeches were given, then there was a countdown, and then a band played while the lighting system took a minute or so to warm up. Opening weekend for the bridge will be the first weekend in March. Lyle Lovett will headline the event.

Young Girl and Grandfather See Sex Act on DART. Apparently this kind of thing happens regularly. Nonetheless I’m sure it was quite shocking to see this happening on DART in the middle of the afternoon. The man who witnessed it pulled out his camera and took video. He then filed a complaint with DART. This makes me wonder: what would you have done had you been in this man’s position? Tim and Zac know my answer from a story I told yesterday: I would just sit there and then talk behind their backs afterward and make everyone else hate them.
