New CVB Video Makes Me Scratch My Head

An alert FrontBurnervian draws our attention to a new Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau video. It’s beautifully shot. The voiceover is poetic. But if you were trying to decided between taking your vacation in, say, Chicago or Dallas, would this draw you here?

  3. Remember that the external image (particularly in the NE) of Dallas is a bit country – this shows it as cosmopolitan. That makes it an effective video. It gives a nod to the country with the horses and the voiceover accent – but focuses on how it’s a modern, vibrant city. I’d wager that was the angle they were going for – and I believe was fairly effective.

PS. They couldn’t find time for a single shot from SMU? Photogenic campus, higher learning… but not a single image?

  4. Absolutely! it illustrates Dallas’ roots and its many attractions – culture, sports, dining, shopping and proximity to an “authentic” Texas experience. I think it’s brilliant. Emotional, beautifully filmed and inspiring. Great job!

  5. To me, it further confirms the idea that Dallas is a cool place to live but a so-so place to visit. Unless you live in Oklahoma. They love it here.

  6. I agree Tim. Is this the best the Dllas Vistors and Convention Bureau could come up with?

The music is slow and boring……the voiceover needs to be exciting, not poetic. It sounds like my grandpa used to sound when he was trying to explain to me how to change my oil.

There is nothing in the video that shows me anything about Dallas…except the moon, which I’m pretty sure can be seen anywhere. Is this Miami? Moon over Miami?
Why didn’t we see somethings that were available to see…really a poor video to draw people in.

  7. Absolutely love it! Shows off our beautiful city and still retains some of the Western touch visitors look for.
This too me says everything wonderful about our beautiful City!

  9. geez, is it over yet? I agree, beautifully shot but way too long. Get to the good stuff faster. Voice-over sounded like he was going for the Whataburger guy but didn’t quite make it. I’d rather hear Matthew Mcconaughey: “All right all right all right…this is Dallas. Where I keep getting older and richer and the girls stay the same age.”

  10. Love it! Haven’t hit “play” yet, though.

  11. A vacation down to waco to remember leftists killing of children and innocent men and women under billybob Clinton would make for a good history lesson

  12. @D. Shapiro: Very solid recap. Now who is going to call Amy?

    @ 12:05 pm on November 21, 2011
  13. Feh. Don’t bother, folks. Turns out Amy gave that guy a bum number. That number (if dialed in the 214) goes nowhere. Amy is such a tease.

  14. But wait! Dallas-Ft. Worth now has NINE area codes! Gotta try ‘em all.

If Amy were a tease, she’d have left us something like (214) 471-1194.

  15. Feh. Just felt like saying that again. I hope it becomes a thing.

  16. I think there are some fantastic shots of Dallas and some of the activities people can enjoy while visiting the area. The narration and the music are wrong…almost poetic, no energy, no excitment. There was no inclusion of Dallas as an international city and sadly it failed in describing what we are all about and why visitors should choose this destination over other. .

  17. I thought the point was to get people to hold a convention here, not a vacation. Aren’t our main competitors for convention dollars similar cities, such as Atlanta, Houston, Denver, KC, St. Louis, Nashville, Phoenix? Except for the grumbly narration, I think the video does a good job of showcasing Dallas as a sparkling, cosmopolitan city. Notice that they didn’t show any western wear, oil wells, pump jacks, honky tonks or the downtown Trail Drive. The only nod to such things was the long aerial shots of the rider alongside the galloping horses. Definitely implying that Dallas is not a dusty cowtown. That narration’s gotta go, though.

  18. Looks like the only black people in Dallas go to Cowboys games. I know who the target market is, I’m not tripping (yet). Seems like this would be a good video to show at conventions, to hospitality types that are considering Dallas. Not so much for individuals thinking about vacationing here though.

  19. I’m drinking the Kool-aid on this one. Love the video.

    @ 1:54 pm on November 21, 2011
  20. @Shawn Williams: That’s exactly what I was about to say. So, Dallas has like three black people and virtually zero other ethnic groups. Got it.

  21. I don’t think that Dallas is supposed to be a great “vacation” spot. We don’t have any beaches. No mountains. The summer is hotter than ____ with no reprieve until October. But a good place to take a trip in the fall or spring or host a convention. For all intents and purposes – did they not nail it? I like.

  22. Chefs Pyles and Fearing are shown but not identified. This makes sense because the audience for this isn’t us, it’s people elsewhere who might bring their conventions here. The piece must be measured by what it emphasizes and seeks to sell: dining, shopping, sports, the performing arts, outdoors. Those are the town’s strengths, and the piece hits its mark, multiple times. I say it works.

And the slightly “wide open west” theme of it all, contrasting the urban images shown, fits what others imagine Big D to be. In that regard, I like the final shot of the horses running as the camera pans back to show the skyline beyond. That imagery evokes a shot that was used in the opening montage of the TV show Dallas.

True, the music is a tad canned, but it is serviceable. I give it a B+ overall.
