Apparently The Colbert Report bothered to broadcast a show opposite the World Series last night, and I’ve been told that Dallas-Fort Worth was among the markets in which it appeared.
During the show, Colbert revealed a new ad for his Super PAC that further cements the fact that there’s some sort of nefarious conspiracy being hatched involving Stephen Colbert, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, and the NBA lockout. Watch it:

Ward Lay, scion of one of the great Dallas families, died earlier this morning. Ward was a true gentleman, in the old-fashioned sense of the word. He loved the sporting life. He restored one of the great hunting/flyfishing ranches of Patagonia, Estancia Alicura, which I have had the pleasure of visiting three times, and cultivated some truly great wines in the Argentinian province of Mendoza. Here’s an Alan Peppard item from last year that gives a sense of his generosity. D CEO also featured his office last year.
Our condolences to the family and to his many, many friends.
You may have already seen this Ron Washington jack-o’-lantern. The internet was talking about it yesterday. It took the top spot in the Old Monk’s pumpkin-carving contest. I learned this morning that it was the work of our very own Mary Catherine Burford, online ad coordinator. Solid work.
This is awesome. Fox 4 declared a Rangers victory before the game was over.
As much fun as I’ve had rooting for the Texas Rangers during these playoffs, I realized after last night’s gut-wrenching contest that I’m still not actually a true fan of the team. If I were, then this morning I would be more depressed and frustrated than I am abuzz about the absolute brilliance of those last few innings. In baseball, more than any other sport, it ain’t over ’til it’s over. It’s much of what makes the game great, even if it hurts something awful, as any Red Sox or Cubs fan can tell you.
But what a game. It’s inconceivable that a team would be down to its final strike twice in game 6 of the World Series and come back to win. It’s inconceivable that a team could come back from two-run deficits twice, in the ninth and 10th innings of game 6 of the World Series, and win. As with much of baseball, that stuff just doesn’t happen. Until it does.
So now that we have the distance of a few hours of fitful sleep, let’s talk about where that game ranks in baseball history, because there’s no doubt that we all witnessed last night one of the most amazing games ever played. Earlier this year, MLB Network ran a series ranking the 20 Greatest Games ever (in the television era, so they’d have some clips to broadcast).
After taking many points off for the many ugly errors that we saw by both the Rangers and the Cardinals last night, I’ve got to rank it No.3 on that list. Behind the famed Carlton Fisk home run game and Jack Morris vs. the Atlanta Braves in 1991. But ahead of the Bill Buckner game and (the game that’s most special to me personally) the Braves’ ninth-inning rally in the 1992 NLCS.
It was that good. I’m hoping Game 7 is just as good. (But I don’t blame diehard Rangers fans for preferring to see a 15-0 blowout.)
History repeating, and we, Ranger fans, are on the wrong side of the ball. Do not forget to burn your offerings to the baseball gods today. It’s our only hope.
Sigh. No really. I have lamentations. And I blame KDFW for the giant sports jinx. Even after this, the damage was done. And yes, I know some of you will go all, “There’s no such thing as a jinx, just poor management and sloppy play.” And yes, this, too. But mostly? JINX. But that being said, how awesome was that game? And I could watch Ron Washington do this all the time.
Napoli Is A Stud. Factual statement. Did you see that ankle roll? I’m no doctor, but I”m pretty sure that ankle isn’t supposed to bend that way. Also, Matt Holliday’s pinky bruise took him out of the game, while Nap stayed in the game after that, and Josh Hamilton has been playing with a groin injury and a hernia. Ergo, Rangers > Cardinals.
Fellow Candidate Disses Perry. Listen, if it was anyone else in the field other than Rick Santorum that mocked Rick Perry for skipping debates, that would’ve said, “Oh, snap!” But it’s Rick Santorum, so I all I picture is some mustache twirling and mincing little gestures.
Yay! Signature Bridges! Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins says a lot of money has been secured for three signature bridges over the Trinity River. They won’t be as fancypants as originally envisioned, but will still be pretty, we’ve been assured.
Whatcha Doing Tonight? If the answer is anything other than, “Watch the Rangers play Game 7 of the World Series,” I don’t even know who you are. Actually, I probably don’t know who you are anyway. But seriously? Are you dead inside? And to the Rangers: Do you really want to disappoint this little face, who just wants you to win “The World Serious?”
Via Deadspin, here is the gist: Short, 76, had been battling various forms of cancer over the past few months, until she finally stopped chemo last week. Her last wish? To live long enough to see her beloved Rangers win the World Series. She died last night.
There are certain Texas Tech fans who place more than a little blame at the feet of John Scovell for the firing of Mike Leach. Scovell is on Tech’s board of regents, and he’s wrapped up with the lawsuit Leach filed against the school. Now a Red Raider-lovin’ FBvian points us to this story about a bad parking garage deal that will wind up costing the university about $1 million. I won’t bore you with the details. But Scovell is once again right at the center of things. Some blame him for forcing the deal on the university. I like Scovell’s response when the reporter asked if he had anything to gain from it:
Scovell said he and his family have no connection to Raider Park parking garage. “Well, absolutely no. Not only no, hell no. That is absolutely ridiculous to think that I’m getting something or that my kids are getting something in return, or we’re investors or whatever — that is garbage. And I’m offended by it.”
A FrontBurnervian directs our attention to this funny piece by The New Yorker’s Roger Angell, who knows what caused the famous Cardinals bullpen confusion in Game 5.
Remember back in August when we learned that Neiman Marcus was revamping The Book, turning it into more of an editorial product? Of course you remember. Now comes news that Neiman’s has found the woman to helm the ship. It is none other than Tracy Achor Hayes, formerly the editor in chief of FD Luxe. Hayes told me last night at a fundraiser for the Dallas Center for Architecture that after working for 30 years at the Dallas Morning News, she never could have left to work for a competitor. Sounds like she found the perfect gig. From what I understand, she’ll have a healthy budget with which she’ll be able to attract national writers.
Remember how yesterday I was having not-indifferent feelings about baseball? Seemingly overnight, this lukewarm sentiment has morphed into a whole lot of caring. And here’s why: if the Rangers don’t win tonight, a seventh game will effectively put a damper on my birthday gathering. So please. Let’s just end this thing.
Not watching the game? Seryn performs tonight for free in Sammons Park outside the Winspear Opera House, part of the AT&T PAC’s Patio Sessions. This outdoor concert series is a much more appealing pursuit now that the high temperatures are in the 80s rather than the 100s. Don’t forget to bring a blanket and a picnic. And by the way— that rescheduled Explosions in the Sky concert happening tomorrow inside the Winsepear? Sold out. Sorry, folks.
What’s not sold out is Anthony Bourdain’s talk at the Majestic Theater. We learned two things about the No Reservations star this week. Number one, he’s still not a fan of the Dallas Morning News’ Leslie Brenner. Number two, there’s some weirdness going on with the press for this event. Regardless, if you’re a fan of the man and/or the show, you probably don’t want to skip out on this one.

Lisa Chambers Says More About Her Firing. I guess no one should be surprised that John Wiley Price is in any way involved here. If the Cowboys benched Tony Romo, I would expect John Wiley Price’s name to come up.
Neiman Marcus to Finally Accept Visa and Master Card. This will be a big deal to some of you. I’m waiting on them to take Discover.
