Robert Jeffress to Bill Maher: “The Left Has Been Pretty Kind to Me”

Since introducing Rick Perry at the Values Voters Summit a week ago, and at the same time saying that he thought Mormonism is a “cult,” Rev. Robert Jeffress has been a verifiable celebrity, especially for liberal-leaning types in the media. And not just Chris Matthews. Friday night, Jeffress went into the belly of the beast, so to speak, flying to Los Angeles for a live one-on-one interview with Bill Maher.

Maher started by giving Jeffress a copy of his 2008 documentary Religulous and immediately tried to bond over what he presumed was their mutual distaste for Catholics. Maher also asked the pastor why he thinks faith is good: “Why is the purposeful suspension of critical thinking good?” Jeffress handled himself well, at one point high-fiving Maher. He also mentioned that, since his comment about Mormonism, “The left has been pretty kind to me,” adding, “It’s the conservatives who have been after me with a meat cleaver.”

  1. Sure they’ve been kind to him. He’s hurting Rick Perry, and they are scared to death of Perry.

  2. The left isn’t too scared of Ricky Bobby. He’s for helping hispanics, and cool big gov’t. moves like making the school girls get vaccinated.

  3. If anything, liberals likes him because he’s saying things that are similar to what they’re thinking (and sometimes saying less articulately) about Romney.

  5. Interesting…Jefress says that Mormonism is a cult as it has not been a traditional form of Christianity. One can also argue that Baptist are a cult since they were not a part of traditional Christianity until 1609.

  6. I want to go after both of them with a meat cleaver. They’re both asspoles.

  7. @Phelps, dems are pleased that comments from Jeffress negatively accrue to Perry, but that doesn’t mean dems are scared of Perry. Not in the least. Dems want ALL of the repubs running to end up as damaged goods by the time one of them is pegged as the nominee. Indeed, a dream repub ticket — as far as most dems are concerned — would be Perry-Bachmann. It won’t happen, sadly, but it’s the kind of nutty ticket that would help give the president four more years. Come on, repubs! Listen to your Tea Party base! We’re begging you!

  8. Everyone I know is dreaming of a Perry/Bachman or Perry/Sheen Republican ticket. Even more after meeting his wife. The magic underwear wearing Mormon is the only one we have a slight fear of. Herman “Qadaffi” Cain will be a distant memory soon.

  9. Jeffress is a LOSER. Why would anybody want to listen to his bigotry ideas?

  10. Here’s a take on why the guests on Maher behave the way they do and say the things they do:
