  1. I had the honor and good fortune to work with Maryln at DMN. What a delight! And, she wrote two of the funniest books on being a Southern Belle. I will never forget her silver pattern zodiac chart. God bless her. Her spirit was a joy to be around!

  2. I had the pleasure of knowing Maryln for a number of years. She was always a delight with her wicked sense of humor and her keen eye for finding people’s quirks, especially Southern people. I visited with her just last week and she still had that sly smile and that funny wit. I will miss her.

  3. How strange, I was just thinking about her and about how different the reading experience of the newspaper used to be. Sorry to hear of her long illness and condolences to her family.

  4. RIP, Maryln. I’ve missed you and John Anders and Maggie Kennedy and Dusty Rhodes for years. We’ve had so many good columnists and writers here in Dallas; each loss due to attrition, layoffs, or other, more morbid reasons causes rips off another layer of our city’s history.

  5. Marilyn hilarious columns were sometimes too good to be true. But never to good to amuse, amaze, and entertain. In taking the High Road, unfortunately journalism has often left its most loyal readers behind.

  6. Loved Maryln. First time I saw her was in the Texarkana Gazette’s newsroom in ‘66 or ‘67. She was in town to cover something and was on the phone with The News’ city desk. She was sitting not at a newsroom desk but on the desk, legs crossed, swinging a leg and chatting merrily with an editor, maybe Bob Compton. Having just begun my career, I was in awe. Maryln looked gorgeous and sophisticated and sounded so professional. Then, in 1971, I was hired at The News and got to work with her and Compton. Felt so privileged. Always admired her. Be at peace, dear Maryln.

  7. @Bill Marvel: Am a little perplexed by your comment, Bill. Are you equating “taking the High Road” with discouraging writers from making up characters in non-fiction newspaper columns?

  8. Maryln was a great colleague and friend at the News. She and I were obsessed with the Walker Railey story, and would discuss it whenever possible. She should have written a book.
One Rosh Hashanah, Maryln and I were headed to services at Temple Emanu-el but wound up instead at a tony restaurant for an extended lunch. There, we ran into Betty Osborne and Maureen Decherd, two great people who never told on us.
Maryln, I like to think that you and Molly Ivins have reunited, stirring things up with humor and grace.

  12. I first met Maryln in the 60’s. I worked for Neimans and she worked for Bob Compton DMN city desk.Maryln traveled with her photographer, Joe Laird to Love Field on a regular basis to meet and interview “people of interest” as they arrived in Dallas.Maryln would call to tell me who was coming in and did I want to meet her at Love Field? We had a “code” name Natasha Nesbit that she would page so Maryln could tell me which gate to meet her at. Joe would take our picture with whoever it was and I would meet that person and back to work for me. These were really fun care-free days…..no cells, no electronics. I don’t think anyone ever knew about this except Joe and he was having too much fun to tell.

RIP my friend….it has been a long struggle.
