So How Hot Is It?

We had this brief, shimmering hope out in the Gulf of Mexico, called Tropical Storm Don. It was supposed to possibly bring rain depending on a cone of uncertainty, according to the meteorologists. Rain. Maybe. This weekend.

Only, there’s been no rain, and Don just kind of sputtered out. As a friend pointed out, incredulously, this Texas heat wave is so big that it ATE A TROPICAL STORM. And now on Sunday, we will tie for the second longest run of days over 100 degrees in Texas. And by Tuesday, it’s projected to be 108 degrees.

What are you doing to beat the heat? Have you become a hermit, like me? Are you still annoyingly running around telling people to suck it up because it’s always hot in the summer in Texas?

  1. Thanks a lot, Don the Tropical Storm. You hit the Gulf Coast and decided you wanted to stay there and be Don the Beachcomber, you slacker.

  2. I’ve built a jagged rock altar in my back yard and started sacrificing stray shoes I find on the freeway as burnt offerings to the rain gods.

My neighbor started to complain, but when he saw me standing there in my loincloth staring at his little dog with my sunken red, heat-fried and allergy infected eyes, he just screamed, threw his Zippo lighter at me, and ran away.

  3. I count my blessings. I only have to weld outside in the heat.

That isn’t near as hard as doing roofing or working on the roads laying asphalt etc. Now that is tough.

  4. Thank heavens it time for two-a-days.
Get those reporters ready to roll on stories about high school kids keeling over in the heat (Editor: Try to find a band kid; I’m tired of jocks getting all the ink!”), stay tuned for more “kid locked in car” stories and don’t forget “one more reason Dallas has giant potholes.”
Heck, heat brings out cynicism and bad moods, doesn’t it, you son of a…hang on, sorry, slipped into a bad mood. Does this sweater go with these pants? Yeah, my shopping clock is set for the northeast, where it’s already autumn…

  5. Actually, Saturday tied the 2nd most consecutive days. Sunday (today) puts this year in sole possession of 2nd at 30. And we will have no problem hitting that seeing it was 96 at DFW at 10:40 AM. The bad news is that the LOWEST high temperature in the next 10 days is forecast at 104 which will put us within 3 days of tying the record and 4 days of breaking the longest consecutive 100+ days since weather keeping has been kept. I just hope we don’t break the 69 days of total 100+ degree days.

  6. I just keep hydrated with plenty of Budweiser, and the heat suddenly seems like a minor impediment.

  7. Too hot to be walking your dog mid-day to evening. This is the hottest part of the day and the sidewalks are sizzling. You wouldn’t walk a mile+ barefoot right now, would you?

  9. I think Don visited us here in Big Bear. High today was 62 and a steady rain.

  10. “Don just kind of sputtered out.” I wonder how much it costs to get that engraved on a tombstone?

  11. Every year starting in July I am one of those people who hates to hear others complain about the heat. I will remind them that we live in Texas, it’s hot, get over it. I didn’t do that this year. The heat is brutal. There’s just no way around it.

Oh, and every time I would hear someone talk about the summer of 1980 I would think, man that sounds absolutely miserable. Little did I know that I would have a chance to experience that misery firsthand in the summer of 2011. I am officially cranky, and it’s only August 1.

  13. Dallas has experienced over 30 consecutive days of 37.78C or higher afternoon highs.

Doesn’t sound so bad when you convert it to Celsius, but I guess it steals the weatherman’s hyperbole.
