Roland Dickey Sr.: “Zero” Impact from Boycott Call

While some wring their hands over Maurine Dickey’s visceral reaction to the current travails of her fellow county commissioner John Wiley Price, few seem bothered about a call by Price’s aide for a boycott of the Dickey family barbecue eateries he’s dubbed “D.E.A.D.”–short for, Don’t Eat at Dickey’s. One exception is blogger Tom McGregor, who’s likened the name to a death threat. While it may not be exactly that, it is a thuggish tack. And maybe that’s why few are surprised and reacting.

Meantime, the D.E.A.D. campaign doesn’t seem to be affecting sales at the Dallas-based family-run chain. Asked if he’s noticed the boycott, company chairman Roland Dickey Sr., who’s married to Maurine, replied, “No. Zero. No impact from it. It’s a free country, though. They can do anything they want,” Dickey said in a call from Savannah, Ga., where he’ll open the company’s 152nd store tomorrow. “I only met John Wiley Price once, and he seemed like a nice guy. Turns out both our mothers started out as maids, or housekeepers. But, him and my wife are from different political parties, and they’re always taking shots at each other.”

  1. If JWP’s folks do indeed boycott Dickey’s, it’ll only make it more appealing. I wish they would!

  2. People who know BBQ already boycott Dickey’s because it is so sorry. Glenn, is “thuggish” right-wing code for the n-word?

  3. Price’s aide Vincent Hall may be applying for a job as a line cook at Dickey’s some day soon, better watch out…

  4. I didn’t even know about the boycott, now that i do i’ll be stopping by Dickey’s for dinner tonight. I still can’t believe that at the time when one of the most disgusting and corrupt politicians in this city’s history was finally getting what he deserved, some people felt it necessary to wag their little judgmental fingers at others for being happy about it, that kind of attitude is more harmful to Dallas than anything Maurine said.

  5. @Donkeylove: A manager at one of the local restaurants told me customers have been coming in specifically because of Hall’s call for a boycott.

@M Streeter: Nope. It’s “code” for a bully or a gangster or a tough guy who uses the threat of violence to intimidate. (But why do I think you already knew that?)

  6. M Streeter seems to be left-wing code for “I don’t mind being the first idiot to throw out the race card in order to rationalize the smorgasbord of apparent questionable business dealings, conflicts of interest, and concealed cash holdings coming to light as this story only initially unfolds”.

  7. Most thuggish types prefer yardbird from Churches, or Popeye’s. Dickey’s will have a great increase in traffic due to this boycott.

  11. I absolutely loved every bite of my Dickey’s chopped BBQ beef sandwich plate that I had for lunch today. Knowing that JWP’s crew doesn’t like them, I’m going to eat there even more. I just finished the archived D Mag story from 1991 by Laura Miller, and it’s disgusting he hasn’t been locked up, much less that he’s still allowed to represent the people of South Dallas.

  12. Amy A,The fools of South Dallas love his type. They keep electing him, so that’s their problem. Nothing but crooks choose to develop in that area of town.

  16. I live in Southern Dallas, and I’m no fool I don’t like John Price, and the way he treats people. Please do not put all people in South in same group.Working people have no idea what goes on in Commissioners Court,DMN does not report on Price’s action so the masses rely on campaign literature and other media types for information. The community is shaken by this last FBI action.Problem is the four other Commissioner allow this man to do what he does. All Black people in Dallas County do not reside in Southern Dallas so why do they look to Price for answers why not govern Dallas County the same for all people?
