Texas’ Hottest Women Sex Offenders List: Worst Idea in the History of Ideas?

So yesterday the Houston Press, sister publication of the Dallas Observer, decided to post an item called “The 10 Hottest Women on the Texas Sex Offenders List.” Which is pretty much what it sounds like.

Yes, they’ve already issued an apology.  And yes, we’ve now linked to them, which may have given them exactly what they wanted in the first place.

Mother Nature Blessed Katy Trail 5K

Part of the crowd headed to the after-party.

Part of the crowd headed to the after-party.

As I watched the incredibly dark, ominous clouds roll in Wednesday, I thought there was no way they’d clear up in time for the Katy Trail 5K. (I know what you’re thinking. The race was on Thursday, not Wednesday. Regardless, I was concerned). No need to worry. The weather for my favorite annual 5K was absolutely perfect. And all 5,000 participants seemed to be thinking the same thing. A few highlights of the after-party run after the jump.

FightNight Insiders Put Kunkle on Top

Mike Rawlings

Mike Rawlings

Boxers like Felipe Castenada and Calvin Shepherd duked it out last night at the annual FightNight fund-raiser, two days before the Dallas mayoral election. But after this week’s news stories, which had candidates Ron Natinsky and Mike Rawlings trading jabs and body blows, you were sort of hoping the mayoral hopefuls would show up and climb into the ring, too, and settle this thing once and for all. Alas, only two of them–Rawlings and Edward Okpa–were among the 1,000-plus attending the black-tie bash at the Hilton Anatole.

Okpa, decked out in a sharp, Little Anthony and the Imperials-looking suit, said (with a straight face) that, come Saturday, he expects to be in a runoff. Rawlings, for his part, declined to speculate about the outcome. “When I play a game, I play hard and don’t make predictions,” he said. “I let the scorecard take care of itself.” Meanwhile, political insiders attending the fund-raiser said that according to the latest internal polling it’s a very close race, with just four percentage points separating the top three contenders. David Kunkle is in the lead, the buzz had it, with Rawlings in second place and Ron Natinsky third.

Ron Springs, Nov. 4, 1956 — May 12, 2011. Former Dallas Cowboy running back Ron Springs died Thursday, never regaining consciousness after falling into a coma nearly four years ago. Springs went into a coma in 2007 after complications from a surgery to remove a cyst from his arm. It was the same year that former teammate Everson Walls donated a kidney to Springs.

Boom Goes the … Applesauce? Bruce Ankenbrand hardly fits the stereotype of a terrorist. For one thing, he’s 7 months old. Nonetheless, his antics were indeed uncovered by the TSA screeners at DFW International, who allegedly found traces of explosives on the jars of his fancy-schmancy organic baby food he and his parents were trying to bring in to allegedly feed him. Word has it the real bomb was to occur two or three hours after ingestion, but could easily be contained within a size 4 Pampers.

Here We Go Again, Southwest. Oh, Southwest. I know you keep getting positive rankings for your customer service, and for good reason. But when you apparently screw up, you do it so gloriously, and with the same subject. I admire your consistency.

No Cutsies – Especially at In-N-Out. So Dallas Observer food writer Jenny Block went to Frisco to snag some In-N-Out, and waited for a very long time (for a burger) with a lot of other people to get in, because the line (for a burger) was really long (for a burger) apparently and the wait for your burger was also very long after you ordered. So everyone apparently didn’t cotton to four guys who tried several times (and ultimately succeeded) to cut in line (for a burger) instead of wait several hours (for a burger). I still do not understand why you’d wait this long and do all this work, for a burger. Is a Double Double made with unicorn meat and buns concocted from grain hand-polished by mermaids before being ground into flour by a stone pulled by a centaur and mixed with tears from that 197os littering commercial Indian chief? Because if so, I’ll take it. If not, I’ll wait a few more weeks and go through the freaking drive through like a normal person eating a hamburger.

Let’s Play a Game. Where am I? And was I aware that I would be flying back to Dallas on Friday the 13th? Am I scared?

Jim Lehrer Stepping Down as PBS Anchor

Long ago Jim Lehrer worked as a reporter at The Dallas Morning News and the late Dallas Times Herald. He went on to anchor the legendary “Newsroom” on KERA with such locals as A.C. Greene, Billy Porterfield, Lee Cullum, Jim Atkinson, John Anders, John Merwin and other colorful characters.

In 1975, he co-anchored and developed “The MacNeill-Lehrer Report” for PBS with Robert MacNeill.  After MacNeill’s retirement in 1995, Jim carried on anchoring “PBS NewsHour.”

Today he announced that he would be stepping down on June 6 as anchor of the show and “begin serving in a contributing role as moderator on Friday evenings.”

Jim will be 77 on May 19.

Funny or Die on Kobe’s Post-Game Press Conferences in the Dallas Series

Kobe Byrant’s Post Game Meltdown – watch more funny videos

Note: “Kobe” drops a trio of unbleeped F-bombs at the end of this video. Also: “You can’t win games with a dry Mamba. The Mamba must be moisturized.” Also also: “Kobe face.”

Newt Gingrich To Host Town Hall at The Lodge?

Newt Gingrich is running for president. I’m thrilled. So is Dawn Rizos, owner the ecdysiastial establishment known as The Lodge. Awhile back, Newt named Rizos “Entrepreneur of the Year” — then withdrew the honor when his people, presumably, informed him that ladies take their clothes off at The Lodge. Anyway, now Rizos has suggested that Newt hold a town hall meeting at her establishment. If it happens, I’m totally there.

Things To Do in Dallas Tonight: May 12

Not to step on Christopher Mosley’s toes, but Thursday night’s the night for music, apparently. And luckily, the thunderstorms rolling in will hit around mid-afternoon and then clear up by early evening instead of screwing up your post-work plans. Thanks again, Mother Nature, for watering my plants.

I’m sure I’ve mentioned this before, but I’ll take an outdoor concert over an indoor one any day. Mostly because I can always see some sort of escape route when the crowd starts getting weird. I went to a Hanson show once (okay, fine, last year), and people seriously tried to mosh to opening act Hellogoodbye. I wanted to kick someone. I probably did. But I highly doubt that’ll be necessary at tonight’s first Barefoot at the Belmont concert. The acts are relaxed (British guitarist Bobby Long and Fort Worth’s Josh Weathers), and atmosphere-wise BarBelmont is one of my favorite places to get a drink— though the last time I was there, neither their mint julep nor their Manhattan impressed. I have it on good authority that there are only 15 tickets left for the show, so get on it fast.

If flannel-wearing boys who write their thesis about the social impact of American folk music don’t appeal, there’s country time going on at the Kessler Theatre not too far away. Austin-based Kelly Willis, who does a cool cover of Iggy Pop’s “Success” on her latest album, will perform along with Nashville newcomer Daphne Willis. No relation, but makes for a fun double-billing.

For more things to do tonight, including D favorite Seryn at the Fort Worth Modern, go here.

UPDATE: Ruining my entire premise, KXT just moved the show to Club Dada due to weather concerns. Darn it. However, that means more tickets are available— get ‘em for $20 at the door.

Denton’s Golden Triangle: Tear Down This Mall

Growing up at the top of what only Denton civic boosters ever call the “Golden Triangle” (of Dallas, Fort Worth, and Denton), I have a longstanding relationship with “the mall” in my hometown. As NBC 5 reported last night, private companies are looking to the city for help in resurrecting the place.

Though I have fond childhood memories of sipping free samples at Orange Julius, getting a little thrill from browsing the naughtier items at Spencer’s, and running back and forth between the two (!) bookstores that were then in operation to determine which would give me a better deal on the latest Xanth-series paperback, I remain keenly aware of one fact: Golden Triangle was, and has always been, an awful mall. Ugly and dark inside, poor selection of shops to browse, few food options.

So when I watch the NBC 5 video (more…)

Follow Police Chief David Brown on Twitter

Chief Brown gives good tweet. Literate and informative.

I saw that Chief Brown follows Mayor Dwaine Caraway and was surprised to see that the latter has locked his tweets and, as a result, only has 67 followers. Let us in, Mayor Caraway!

Another Key to the City Is Handed Out. It seems like everybody’s getting a key to the city these days. Last weekend, Angela Hunt made a few announcements about a “colleague” and his lack of judgment when handing out a key to the city to Michael Vick. Well. Then she gave an edible key to a bait dog that was rescued from Vick. That poor dog. He’s in such an awkward position right now. That’s one of those gifts where you debate whether or not you should eat it. On the one hand, it’s a key to the city. On the other, it’s edible.

Girl Gets Her Money. Jason asked how long it would take this girl to receive her money. Turns out, it took just a day. And, through the generosity of others, she’s received at least double what she turned in.

55 Years Later, Student Graduates. Burlyce Logan is one of 11 black students who enrolled at UNT after it was integrated. But the reception the students got was not great. So after two years, she left. It’s taken quite awhile for her to get back to UNT, but Logan says she knew she wanted to get her degree from there. On Saturday, she’ll become the third of the original 11 to graduate.

Study Says Dallas Is a Bad Transit Area. Right. We already knew this. But now there’s a study that proves it. The study, done by the Brookings Institute in Washington, says that for as many jobs as Dallas and surrounding areas have, only one out of five is accessible by public transit. The study ranked Dallas 89th out of 100 metropolitan areas (Hey, we beat Miami!). The study cites a large land area and multiple entities providing services as two of the problems in providing public transit. The study did not look at the quality of service given by these entities (DART, T in Fort Worth, and Denton County Transit Authority), just merely accessibility. And speaking of accessibility, you have to be a subscriber to view that story. See what I did there?

Mayoral Candidates Support Parkland

As I noted a couple days ago, I’m involved in an intricate conspiracy with Parkland Hospital and UT Southwestern to discredit the Dallas Morning News. Today, my fellow conspirators and I are prepared to share a bit more about the extent to which this effort has spread across city. As you’ll see from this letter of support for Parkland and UT Southwestern, which is signed by close to 300 people, including all four mayoral candidates (and Rep. Dan Branch, George Bramblett, Mary McDermott Cook, Robert H. Dedman Jr., Nash Flores, Howard Hallam, Lyda Hunt Hill, Walt Humann, Hunter Hunt, Lee Jackson, Veletta Forsythe Lill, Bob Kaminski, Earle Nye, Jim Oberwetter, Caren Prothro, and Jim Turner, among others), the Dallas Morning News — or, if you prefer, the Morning News or the DMN or the News — is screwed.

All kidding aside: most of the people who signed that letter are rich, and some of them even know what they’re talking about. I would love to know what sort of phone calls Jim Moroney is getting about his paper’s coverage of Parkland and UT Southwestern.

Update (3:49): I overlooked the names John Eagle and Carl Sewell on that letter. Both men are far too savvy to consider pulling their companies’ auto ads over such a thing. Right?

‘Honesty Doesn’t Pay in Dallas’: City Keeps Teen’s Money

Now that the WFAA story about the city of Dallas keeping $2,000 that was found by a Plano teen has gone national and been given the above headline by the Atlantic Wire, how long until she gets her money?

UPDATE: Answer: Less than 120 days.

More Layoffs at the Star-Telegram

Not good news coming from where the West begins. An alert FrontBurnervian points us to the Facebook page of Betsy Friauf, a former Star-Telegram writer. She has names of a handful of people who’ve been let go, and a lively discussion has ensued.

Robert “Tractor” Traylor, Dead at 34

Not everyone can imagine a time when Dirk Nowitzki was not a Dallas Maverick. But once upon a time, he was not. In fact, the Mavericks traded 6th overall draft pick Robert “Tractor” Traylor to Milwaukee in exchange for Dirk in 1998, paving the way for Big German to become number one in our hearts, if not our programs.

Traylor has been playing in Puerto Rico recently for the Vaqueros de Bayamon, who reported this morning that Traylor, 34, was found dead in his apartment.
