Farmers Branch Voters Say No To Own ISD

Back in December, Farmers Branch Mayor Tim O’Hare said he’d like the city to have its own school district, instead of being a part of the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD or (depending on where you live) sending your kids to a Dallas ISD school. That idea made it onto the ballot, where it was defeated.

O’Hare says the blame probably lies with the fact that his city has a lot of old people, who don’t have his vision. How exactly that vision would’ve been carried out is a little up for discussion, too, considering you need 8,000 students to form a new district, and there are only 4,000 in the whole CFBISD.

  1. Are you sure that 4,000 total enrollment in CFBISD is right? Sure seems low.

  2. *SNORT* A bunch of old people who have no vision??? Well, that certainly is a telling statement from the former mayor as to how he views his former constituency. I bristle at the stupidity of such an assertion!

  3. Says here CFBISD has 25,475 students:

I’m guessing 4K is the number of FB residents in CFBISD schools?

  4. According to CFBISD’s website, they have an enrollment of 25,475 as of 8-Sep-2010, not 4,000.

  5. Here I was all ready to bust on Bethany for not properly reporting on this when, lo and behold, I see the 4,000 student figure was misreported in the story she linked to.

So it’s either KRLD or KTVT today who can’t edit copy. Wondering if it was effed up on air, too.

  6. Farmers Branch, like the Park Cities and Addison, should be annexed by the city of Dallas.

  7. I am just wondering where O’Hare was planning on sending HS students since all the High Schools in CFBISD are in Carrollton.

  8. @CraigT – Ranchview HS is in Irving.

  9. @Colin Z: You are misunderstanding the requirement. How many students are living in Farmers Branch that attend CFBISD or DISD? These are the students that would make up the new district. There are not more than 8,000. The total enrollment of CFBISD is irrelevant here.

  10. I think it was probably an anti-Tim vote as much as anything else, not that I would disagree with that. It’s hard to find too many people that have anything positive to say about him.

  11. Colonel: Were you planning on asking the residents of these cities what they wanted or just taking them by force? Dallas would no doubt be happy to annex most any its suburbs. Trouble is, none of these cities want to be swallowed up by the black hole, oops (sorry JWP), I mean, doughnut hole that is Dallas.

  12. Speaking as a native Dallasite: we don’t want Farmer’s Branch, Addison or especially the Park Cities. In fact let’s seal the wall around the latter.
