The Most Boring Mayoral Race of All Time?

I just received an email from Ron Natinsky’s campaign listing his five priorities as mayor.

(1) continue to build the Dallas economy; (2) continue crime rate drop (3)  continue to bolster the arts (4) continue to improve public education, and (5) continue to improve downtown

Anybody want to get in a fistfight over any of that? Do Mssrs. Kunkle and Rawlings disagree? Even a teensy, little bit?

A soporific mayoral race is a sign of good times. Politics only gets passionate when things go wrong. A city that is happy, that is doing business, going to church, drinking at clubs, taking the kids to parks, is a city that is utterly unconcerned with politics.

The day after the election, I expect an editorial in the News bemoaning the low turnout as a sign of citizen apathy. Wrong. It will be a sign of citizen contentment. Such times are rare. Enjoy them.

  1. I don’t think it’s about the issues right now now as much it is about leadership ability going forward. Dallas seems to have done the best (and I know you might disagree but I like you anyway) when we’ve had a CEO Mayor. I think Dave Kunkle is an awesome guy. I hope he stays around and contributes in a meaningful way. I think that Mike Rawlings has the vision, experience and leadership ability that will serve Dallas very well. And he’s not looking for any other political gigs down the road. He wants to be Mayor of Dallas, that’s it. Go Big Mike!

  2. “Continue to improve public education”, at least it’s a sign of acknowledgement that the school-ship is turning, yes?

  3. Might not be boring at 2 p.m. Sunday when the Metroplex Animal Coalition hosts a free, open-to-the-public Q&A forum with the four candidates at the downtown Dallas Public Library. There are issues of respect and image…

  4. “…because being mayor is all about solutions.”

I like the way he says solutions.

  5. Not a lot of contentment here. City Hall has been focused on making life better for tourists, visitors and Arts District donors – at the expense of those of us who actually live in Dallas.
I want police and fire-rescue workers on the job, streets and utilities maintained, parks, rec centers and libraries up-to-date and (this is a big one, especially on Northwest Highway between Marsh and Harry Hines) stoplights working.
From what I’ve seen and heard, Kunkle is willing to listen to the concerns of residents and make them a priority. Rawlings and Natinsky seem ready to continue with Leppert’s unfinished agenda.

  6. I think I like Kunkle the best, anyone who can be Dallas Police chief and walk away still looking good has my respect.

  7. Content? ABC – Always Be Closing, Wick.

City Hall corruption? Construction projects disguised as the Trinity bond campaign? Where are my parks? 14-1? Walk around money during campaign season? Vote harvesting? Absentee ballots? The Peoples’ Hotel? A city loaded up with debt? The winning mayor is determined by how much $$$ is spent? Too much focus on the office park known as downtown?

I recall a Manchurian Candidate saying this is the decade of Dallas. I hope this is the decade that Dallas’ is cleansed of its corruption and antiquated urban development ideas and scams.
