The Dallas Morning News does much good work, and everybody of course makes mistakes. But if you’re going to go behind a paywall with much-ballyhooed “exclusive” content, you’d better have credible info– or, failing that, you’d better be nimble enough to revise or correct stories quickly. Which is why this weekend’s DMN article (subscription required) on area political campaigns–including the mayor’s race in Addison–was so curious.
The report says that Addison Mayor Joe Chow can’t run again because of term limits and that former city councilman Todd Meier has announced as a candidate to succeed him–period. So, readers of the big-circulation Sunday paper would never know that Addison Mayor Pro Tem Don Daseke resigned as pro tem on Jan. 17 and filed his papers for the mayor’s race the same day. Seems like a pretty substantial omission regarding a prominent Addison businessman/community leader but, so far, no online “update” has been forthcoming.

I will not subscribe!
Funny thing is, I’m not a subscriber, yet I can read the article.
They should have mentioned that Todd Meier ran last time for Mayor and was beaten in a landslide.
If Todd runs the same sleazy campaign again this time, he will lose by a similar margin.
I can’t remember a time when Joe Chow WASN’T mayor of Addison. There were other mayors before him and there will be others after him? Balderdash.
I just realized what all these “no pay,” “no subscribe” nuts are talking about. I subscribed to The Newsjust before the pay wall went up, so I’ve been smoothly sailing right from FrontBurner to the DMN. No sweat.
Listen, folks. I’m a starving, recent-exoneree from an institution of higher learning and I shelled out my pennies to read the paper. You can too. It won’t hurt that much and then you’ll know what the hell’s going on in the world.
You’re welcome.
@B.L. Powell – I shell out for the Wall Street Journal, about half the price of DMN delivered, and they added sports (at least enough for this girl). Same AP news, too.
As long as you’re a registered user you don’t have to subscribe…yet.
Don Daseke will make a great Addison mayor
He is honest, honorable and dedicated. He (and his wife) are truly devoted to the best for Addison.
The DMN is good for two things…..obits and the weather. Why would anyone pay to read their ill written stories?? If this is the DMN last ditch effort to stay a live, I would say they are on life support.
as a subscriber of the paper i have access to all content of DMN site.. i love it for the fact that you can send obits/articles to FB and to friends in other parts of the country.
Don Daseke is one of the most deciated people I know to Addison and Dallas non profits as well they (he and Barbara) really make a difference. Cannot imagine these days that people are so dedicated that they put themselves on out there so others can take shots at them.. kudos if you have the dedication and Don does!
this sounds like a great story for A magazine
Todd Meier wins the election. This is a wake-up call for everybody in the town. The town wants a change, and Todd was exactly what the people wanted. it’s time to get behind Todd and the great things he will do for the city!
