Kunkle Is Definitely Running for Mayor

kNo big surprise here, but David Kunkle’s wife, Sarah Dodd, sends word that the man has filed paperwork naming his treasurer. And that treasurer? None other than Steve Wolens, Laura Miller’s husband.

I have two questions about candidate Kunkle: 1) Can he convince the business establishment that he’s their man? And 2) will voters have enough exposure to him to learn that he’s not a cyborg? Kunkle isn’t the best public speaker. If you don’t know him, on first blush he can come across like he just suffered a head injury and isn’t quite sure he remembers how to speak. But if you spend a little more time with him, you begin to understand that he’s just a very careful, thoughtful person.

In any case, what might have been a boring election just got more interestinger.

  2. I’ll say… more “interestinger” for sure.. figured Ron Natinsky would have been a shoe-in . Lots think Angela Hunt but I personally think she was so divisive that Ron can beat her. Time to rerun the Dmagazine Article on him and Sarah Dodd before someone else does.

  3. David’s biggest hurdle was described by Mencken: “The candidate for public office must either bark with the pack or be lost. All odds on the man who is the most devious and mediocre.”

Ron Natinsky embodies he who the odds are on.

  4. That tie is about as wide as an apron, and his watch looks like a hubcap.

And yet I dig it. The colors, the big D logo, the chairs shoved up against the wall. The whole boulyanski.

This election is definitely going to be funister than normal.

  5. I wonder if he would like that gig? He should stay away from the Craig James endorsement.

  6. I also have two questions about candidate Kunkle.

    1. Did it take a personal prompting by Sarah to Tim to post this more than 3 hours after other major blogs and news outlets?

    2. Did Tim not read James Ragland’s column yesterday about Kunkle’s claims of business support? No comment?

  7. Neither Hunt nor Natinsky is particularly pro-business.

My father owns an architecture firm in town, and is particularly close to a certain city-owned hotel currently under construction next to the Dallas Convention Center. Such a project would never have come to pass under a Hunt or Natinsky administration at Dallas City Hall. Dad is enthused about Kunkle’s candidacy and its implications for business.

The former “top cop’s” excruciating lack of communication prowess can be fixed. I suggest that he start public speaking lessons now.

Oh, and has Eric Celeste signed on to run PR for him yet?

    re: The Convention Center Hotel

In many places, a municipal government taking on a role traditionally played by private enterprise (i.e. hotel development and ownership) while simultaneously demonizing the existing privately financed competition as being owned by a “greedy Park Cities millionaire” would be considered very “anti-business.”

  9. @Dee Dee: 1. If you consider cash payment to be a form of “personal prompting,” then yes. 2. I did read Ragland’s column. Just because Kunkle claims it doesn’t make it true. Kunkle — which my spellcheck wants to change to “knuckle” each time I type his name — is still in the process of making house calls to the moneyed crowd. It’s not clear yet how, on the whole, they’ll receive him. But I think his choice of treasurer is a good early indication.

@B.L. Powell: Kunkle isn’t going to get any better as a performer. The man has been speaking in front of audiences for a long time. He’s as good as he’ll get. He’s also aware of his shortcomings and sees his own weakness as a strength. I.e., no one will ever mistake him for being slick. I tend to agree with him. But, again, you need some time with him before you realize this. Your initital reaction will be: “Why doesn’t this man ever blink his eyes?”

  10. I have had the privlege of knowing David Kunckle since I first interviewed him as a candidate for the position of Chief of Police
for the City of Dallas. I had the pleasure of sitting on the Citizens panel appointed by the City Manager to asses the Cadidates for Police
    Chief.

During his tenure as Chief I believe he set the tone and provided unwavering leadership to the Dallas Police Department.

I believe his calm and calculated demeanor and proven leadership skills would be just the ticket
    for the Citizens of Dallas.

I will be supporting David Kunckle for the major
    of Dallas.

  12. Uh, it’s “you’re.” Also, the comma goes inside the quotation mark.

    People in glass houses . . .

Plus, I’m going to be supporting David Kunkle for “major,” too — and “minor,” when he’s standing up.
