We’ve still got about five hours until the weekend officially begins, but I’ll go ahead and get the party started with two words.
Free. Pie.
Today
On this Friday, January 21, it’s truly great to be an American.
Why?
Because it’s Free Pie Day at Norma’s Café. Here’s how it works: In honor of National Pie Day, Norma’s will be doling out free slices to anyone who buys an entrée all day long, which means you’ll be choosing from a selection of homemade flavors (like peanut butter-chocolate, lemon, and coconut) loaded with whipped meringue. I know, I know… It’s not exactly free. But with a menu that ranges from PB&J to chicken-fried steak, you’re bound to find something you love at Norma’s.
Now, the cafe closes kinda early (either 8 or 9 pm depending on which location you patronize), which means you’ll have your whole night still ahead of you by the time you get done with dinner. So hurry over to the Dallas Museum of Art, where their monthly Late Nights at the DMA event is happening tonight. This month happens to be loaded with intriguing options, including tours of a few exhibitions, an African drum parade, live performances by Brave Combo and Telegraph Canyon, and a screening of Exit Through the Gift Shop, which delves into a French filmmaker’s journey to discover the identity of the enigmatic graffiti artist known as Banksy.
Tomorrow
Dallas is always bound to offer a concert that’ll fit your musical tastes, but Saturday night’s music schedule in particular will have a bit of a throwback feel to it, with performances for fans of the old school (James McMurtry), older school (Johnny Mathis), and oldest school (Also Sprach Zarathustra).
McMurtry, spawn of the legendary author Larry, is bringing his Americana folk rock to the stage of the Granada, while smooth crooner Johnny Mathis will be performing alongside the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra to recreate some of the hits he’s recorded since the ‘50s.
But the most powerful performance of the weekend will no doubt be the DSO’s rendition of Also Sprach Zarathustra by Strauss. Perhaps best known as the song that plays in my head whenever I enter a room, it also served as the intro music for 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Sunday
Parents might be happy to hear that Sunday is full of kid-friendly entertainment options. The Angelika will be wrapping up its two-day KidFilm Festival with six movie screenings, including a special sing-along version of The Wizard of Oz. It’s also when you can catch the one-day-only run of Family Matters: The Musical featuring the Berenstain Bears.
But if your kids are at that age where they show their love by avoiding you at all costs, your Sunday may be better spent at the Hair of the Dog Happy Hour. From 4 to 8 pm, Three Sheets is offering $1 mimosas, $3 PBR drafts, $1 off all other drinks, and a respite from the consequences of last night’s bad decisions.
What am I forgetting? A lot, probably. So sift through the rest here to plan your perfect weekend.
