The Christmas Ties of Jerry Merwin, Ctd.

Santa in wreath IMG_9303In the annals of Jerry Merwin’s Christmas ties, this one is a milestone. It’s the first one he ever bought. That was some 15 years ago, when Jerry was working in information services in Dallas for the Internal Revenue Service. Whatever moved him to make the purchase? “Just to be in the Christmas spirit,” he says. One person looked closely at the tie and told him, “Santa Claus has sort of a brown face,” Jerry recalls. “So they figured this was my ‘integration’ tie.”

FrontBurner First Look: Smash and Grab

Tim asked me to get to work on a pilot for Smash and Grab, loosely based on the life and crimes (SEE WHAT I DID THERE??) of Charlie Perez, “one-man crime wave.” Turns out, I had already written a script for a similar series that FOX picked up a couple of years ago. They ultimately decided against shooting the pilot, but I was able to rescue the opening scene, along with the network’s notes. I’ve hidden it not so carefully after the jump.

Things to Do in Dallas Tonight: Dec. 22

Question: What says “Christmas” more than experimental sci-fi performed by a psychedelic rock band?

Answer: Many, many things. Like, almost everything. But! If you’ve struggled to find reason to get into the holiday spirit this year, it’s time to start doing something (anything) to raise your general sense of yuletide cheer.

So if the regular slate of Christmas fare doesn’t float your boat, you ought to skip off to the Texas Theatre tonight, where they’ll be screening the Flaming Lips’ 2008 film, Christmas on Mars. The movie stars every member of the band, and it was written and directed by Lips frontman Wayne Coyne, who likes to spend at least part of every concert he plays crowd-surfing while encased in a giant plastic ball. That should tell you everything you need to know when making your decision about whether or not to attend.

Mike Snyder Joins the Wolf Group

The former NBC Channel 5 anchor has signed on as an executive consultant with the Wolf Group, a local communications outfit that does political consulting and advertising. Mike Snyder writes on his Facebook page: “First day with the new team at the Wolf Group in Dallas. This is a talented bunch, they get it and they’ve got it. My seat belt fastened and pulled tight! This is going to be a fun ride on the way to making a big difference.” Really, to appreciate those words, you have to hear Zac say them with his best Ron Burgundy impression. Awesome.

Rumor has it that the Wolf Group is in talks with Jane McGarry, too, in an effort to reassemble JAM.

Leading Off (12/22/10)

1. Alan Peppard brings us a cool story today about Dallas and the Super Bowl. He writes: “Forty-four years ago, the seed of the big game was planted in secret in a parking lot at Love Field and incubated in a series of spy vs. spy meetings in Highland Park and North Dallas. As the sons of Texas’ two most famous oilmen tried to settle their differences, the modern NFL emerged and a national celebration was born.” Recommended reading. I wish they’d make that guy write more than just his column. He’s good at it.

2. Then there’s Charlie Perez, a thief who likes to break into cars. Cops call him a “one-man crime wave.” Yes, he’s a heroin addict. But he’s a lovable heroin addict. Like, one time, right after he got out of jail, Perez stopped by the police station to taunt the cops who had arrested him. Zac finally finished the cover story for our February issue yesterday. With that off his plate, I’m pretty sure he has time today to work on the pilot episode of the TV show based on Perez’s life. It’s called Smash and Grab.

3. Catfight! American Airlines and Orbitz are all kinds of pissed at each. Now American has pulled its tickets off the online booking service. Snap!
