NYTimes Census Map Reveals Dallas

I could spend all day with this excellent new interactive tool. It maps cities by race, income, housing, and education, with subsets in each category. For example, census tract 196 — the eastern portion of Highland Park — has a median household income of $157,000, and that’s probably because an astonishing 43 percent of its residents hold master’s degrees. Meanwhile the most explosive percentage growth in income in the last 10 years has been in the southern sector (on a very low base, but still), while some of the more affluent areas have actually lost ground.

FrontBurner Nation, here is a worthy way to waste an afternoon. Dig around in the data. Share your discoveries. There are 8 million stories in the Naked City. Tell us one of them.

  1. You know what’s revealing? “Elementary Students in Private Schools” — for the census tracts north of Northwest Highway (that’s Preston Hollow, right?), the numbers are 100 percent, 94 percent, 95 percent.

Also odd: same-sex households. Cedar Springs, yes — but surprisingly low! 5, 6, 7 percent. That’s less than Kessler Park (8 percent), and about the same as Irving south of Irving Blvd. and east of Loop 12 (5 percent), and the area down by Fairfax Park in southeast Fort Worth(6 percent).

These ethnicity maps on Flickr are somewhat better because more fine-grained – the NY Times chose one dot per 500 people which might work for New York but is too coarse for DFW.

  2. There sure are a lot of people in White Rock Lake. I’d be interested to see that boat full of 50 Asians.
