Hot Ticket: Coppell v. Trinity

By the time I arrived at Coppell High School this morning to pick up tickets for Friday night’s game tixagainst Euless Trinity—about 7:30 a.m.—a line was already forming around the building. So it’s no surprise that by mid-afternoon, a friend (and fellow Coppellian) had to drive to the Trinity field house to snatch up some tickets of her own.

The high school football match-up has all the makings of a great game: Both teams are 13-0 and are playing for the Class 5A Division I Region I title. The only thing that stinks is the venue. Trinity won the coin toss and opted to play Friday night at Dragon Stadium in Southlake, which has a seating capacity of about 12,000. (Coppell had wanted a Saturday game at SMU.)

Even when CHS plays Southlake during the regular season, the stadium sells out. Trinity’s choice gives Coppell one less day to prepare, but it means a lot of fans—from both schools and of high school football in general—will be left out in the cold.

  2. Ridiculous.

They need to pull a double-header at Jerryworld. The local boys can chow the Dirty Burglare and Corn Aggy how real football is played.

  4. It was a selfish choice of venue on the Trinity coach’s part. Fans on both sides should have the opportunity to watch their kids/friends play. Shame on him for not having enough belief in his players to win on their own versus using mind games or whatever his motivation was. Midland pulled that trick last week too….didn’t seem to work so well for them…

  5. Having one less day to prepare means nothing against Trinity. If anything, one less day hurts Trinity since Coppell runs a more complicated offense.

Trinity is the better team with bigger and stronger athletes. That will have much more of an effect on the outcome than what stadium they play in.

  6. Trinity’s Coach picked Carroll because it’s central to both schools. He could have picked a larger venue but that would have required travel. Trinity typically packs more fans so this decision probably cost Trinity’s fanbase more than Coppells. Plus this way, the game probably gets picked up by local TV.

    Wait and see

  7. UIL rules forbid live coverage of high school football games on Friday night. Thursday and Saturday are OK, but not Friday. Not sure why that is.

  8. Would have loved to go to this game but after hearing where it was, I figured tickets would sell out quickly and driving to Southlake on a Friday night would stink. I hate JerryWorld but wish it was there.

    Go Trojans!!

  9. The Trojons will not able to stop Coppell’s defense and evasive, speedy offense. Our defense will shut them down. I predict Coppell will move to #1 in the Nation and Trinity will be another “has been” team and will limb him in tears.

  10. Mike, Mike, Mike,
You have obviously not been watching Trinity football much or you would show a little more respect. Trinity has won 26 straight games and 18 of their last 19 playoff games. They started #1 in the state and have not moved. No disrespect against Coppell. They are a great team with super athletes, but for every one of Coppell’s superstars, there are at least two from Trinity. One playing and one resting. The depth of Trinity’s bench is unmatched by anyone.
    Here is an example:
    Coppell-4102 total yards offensively
    Minden-2030 yards passing
    Mc Daniel-1354 rushing

    Trinity- 6254 total yards offensively
3 backs w/ 1,000 yards rushing each (or near it)
    5 others w/200+ yards each
    2 quarterbacks w/ 500+ passing
Also, currently Coppell is not in the Rival’s top 25…They are #28 with Trinity being #4. In the USA Today Super 25, Trinity is #1 and Coppell is not rated…..

  11. I am a huge Trinity Trojan fan and have been for the last eight years, I have followed Trinity all this season especially. This will prove their greatest test yet this year, forget about the numbers, Trinity had one of the easiest districts for a 5a high school football team. This is gonna be a fourth quarter showdown, I guarantee you. Of course I want Trinity to pummel Coppell like they did to teams in their district, but its just not happening. Coppell is too sound of a football team this year and they are out for blood. We’ll see who has enough in the take for the 4th…

  12. Trinity will wear down Coppell in the 2nd half. Thats the way they play football, the defense gets tired ,thats all there is to it.
