Things to Do in Dallas Tonight: Nov. 8

I’d like to thank coffee and chocolate for making this post possible today. Hurray for stimulants! Anyway, if today is your birthday (happy birthday, Dad) you are a Scorpio, and your horoscope is as follows:

“Try not to worry too much about how abstract principles are affecting the nuts and bolts of your life — you need to just go along with it all and make sure that you’re more or less where you want to be.” “Where you want to be” – that just happens to be my purview, brothers and sisters. Jump with me to learn more.

Tonight, Dallas performer Liz Mikel will pay tribute to actress-singer Della Reese. You surely know Reese from her role as Tess on Touched by an Angel, but you may not be familiar with her full body of work, which spans many decades and includes jobs as disparate as gospel singer and game-show panelist. Mikel’s bluesy, smoky voice is well suited for this show, which is free, by the way.

Get to South Side on Lamar a little early for dinner at Texas Caribbean Foods. I’ve heard the jerk chicken and curried goat are excellent, but I’d be curious to try the mysterious-sounding “international gumbo.” If you’re not ready to go home after the show and don’t feel like finding parking elsewhere, check out Absinthe Lounge. DJs Nathan and Eric Scholwinski are reportedly on  duty tonight. As for drinks, I recommend Scotch and soda or gin and tonic. Maybe they’re not imaginative, but they get the job done.

Check out these other things to do in Dallas, and have a great night.
