Accessory of the Week: Piper Young

Piper Young IMG_1822The fashion troops gathered at Stanley Korshak’s The Shak Thursday evening to kick off the search for this year’s “Fresh Faces of Dallas.” Standout in the fresh and refreshed crowd was Lake Highland’s own Piper Young (pictured), a residential realtor with Rogers Healy and Associates. Bet Piper will be among this year’s crop of Fresh Faces that benefits the Suicide and Crisis Center.

Your Open Texas Rangers v. New York Yankees Thread

I’ve read some moving stories today about people’s long, tortured relationship with the Texas Rangers and the absolute joy they are now feeling. One that stands out — I believe I saw this on the Twitter feed of Ben Rogers (of ESPN’s “Ben and Skin” show) — was from a man whose father died a month ago, who found out yesterday his pop had left him money specifically to buy World Series tickets. (Just got dusty in here again.) Anyway, it’s Friday, you’re probably not doing anything other than thinking about tonight’s game, so talk it up in the comments, InsideCorner-style. I’ll try to approve them as fast as I can.

Man, why did I have to go and bring up InsideCorner? Now I’m really having a sports cry. Damn you, Evan!

Things to Do in Dallas This Weekend: Oct. 15-17

Holy smokes, people. You’ve got a lot of options this weekend. If I didn’t live here, I’d be jealous. Let’s get right to it.

Tonight

For the energetic arts patrons among you, I recommend heading downtown tonight for the museum block party, which as Nancy Nichols over on our Dallas food blog excitedly notes will include an appearance by a food truck. If you’d rather support the arts from the comfort of a chair, however, check out Wild and Free, a dance performance set to the music of Dallas native Norah Jones. Contemporary Ballet Dallas imparts this little tip: “Leave your boots at home … this is not your typical Texas!” (What is “typical Texas,” one wonders.) I fully intend to wear my red stiletto boots tonight, so I guess I’ll have to seek my fun elsewhere. Like, say, at the Bring Your Own Mug party. Follow me to the next page for the rest of your weekend itinerary.

Tom Hicks Owns Liverpool No More

Tom Hicks lost Liverpool after the court lifted the restraining order against the sale of the club to Red Sox owners New England Sports Ventures. Basically, the judge here – Jim Jordan – lifted the RO and the contempt citations against NESV because Hicks was asking for the same thing here that English courts had already denied.

My favorite part of this story?

“Hicks will continue with his suit that asks for $1.6 billion in damages against the club, arguing that the board and the Royal Bank of Scotland conspired to make Hicks lose money.”

Does anyone really have to help Hicks lose money on sports teams? He’s basically his own personal cooler, right?

Gay Father Booted From Park Cities Popcorn Sales

Columnist Merritt Patterson of Park Cities People reports that the Boy Scouts have disallowed a University Park Elementary dad from leading their annual fundraising popcorn sales because of his sexual orientation.

Yankee Fans Ready to ‘Saddle Up!’

NY_DNYou know how Fox always shows the Fort Worth Stockyards or the cattle statues near City Hall at the end of commercial breaks during Cowboys games? New Yorkers must think we all ride horses to work. Hence, this headline on the cover of today’s New York Daily News. But my favorite headline on this page is the one on the bottom.

(FYI, I couldn’t grab a posting-quality copy of it, but today’s New York Post cover features the headline “Texas Throwdown” above an illustration of Derek Jeter pointing a pair of six-shooters at the reader. You stay classy, Big Apple.)

A couple of days late on this, but if you haven’t seen this — the entire thing — make some time. Everyone needs to see it.

DART Wishes Happy Belated Birthday to Naomi Watts

On my Red Line train this morning, the LED display is listing celebrity birthdays from Sept. 28.

Leading Off (10/15/10)

1. The last showdown between Danny Clancy and Dallas County DA Craig Watkins happened at Friendship West Baptist Church last night. Watkins said Clancy is a lying liar who lies, and Clancy said Watkins needs to do something about voter fraud in Dallas County.

2. Six World War II veterans insist they weren’t dressed like hobos, but were dressed comfortably, when the hostess at  Wolfgang Puck’s Five Sixty refused them entry based on their attire. The story shows that these men – all in their 80s and 90s – had remarkably strong senses of humor about the incident.

3. Maybe it’s a bad time to be older, inappropriately dressed, and eating at a restaurant.

4. No link for this, but this morning I awoke to find a neighbor’s e-mail, telling me last night she saw a coyote crossing Midway Road, near St. Monica Catholic Church. It had someone’s pet in its mouth. So if you live  near the Midway Hollow/Preston Hollow area, you might want to keep your pets in at night. And yourself. And then shout very loudly as you exit your house, “THIS IS THE CITY, YOU ARE IN THE WRONG PLACE. GO AWAY, PERHAPS TO FRISCO OR SUNNYVALE.” I hear that works.

5.  It’s Friday. The Rangers are playing the Yankees. College football all over the television. It’s Fall, and it’s time to drag out the fire pit and drink beers in your back yard.
